This mod adds a HDR-like effect to HL2 singleplayer, it looks real nice to me, although not quite HDR.

How much does this impact on framerate?

Looks nice, but I think I'll wait for the official edit from valve for HDR.

Do tell, what exactly is HDR? I know it's whiting things out, in simple terms.

It looks horrible. All it does it wash out the colors and make it look like you are staring into the sun.

It's an effect that adds tons of realism to lighting.

first of all this mod is NOT HDR it's bloom

before someone says "hl2 already has bloom"

the effect in HL2 (for the sun) is not bloom it's basically a lens flare an ancient effect which in HL2 is done exceptionally well

HDR = High Dynamic Range

basically it's a way of doing things like lighting which looks fairly realistic it also allows for color values beyond the limits of the standard 8bits per channel

I agree. The worst part about it, however, is the fact that designers more often than not overuse it. I remember Fable, where many situations were nothing but a white blur *shudder*

In lay-layman's terms, HDRR attempts to recreate image exposure artifacts. Monitors have a limited brightness, while objects in real life may appear so bright that they are painful and create a glare.

Imagine what the world would be like if your eyes never adjusted to the light. That's Bloom.
