Most powerful momentsin films for you..

Yeah, you know what to do. Post what the most moving moment (or moments) in film history were for you, how it affected you/why, etc. :)

My two so far that I can think of are from two separate movies.

Glory - Where denzel washington is getting whipped, and the single tear falls from his eye. If youve seen the movie, you'll know why I think it's powerful

Amistad - Pretty much a lot ofthe movie. But the most moving for me was the part where the slaves are thrown chained to eachotehr in the water. Even the thought of that image bringsme almost to tears.

Those images for me are pretty powerful. What're yours?

Obligatory Braveheart "Freeeeeeeeedommmmmm!"

The Patriot when Mel Gibson raises the flag and charges.

More I can't think of now.

Napeoleon Dynamite, when Napeoleon rode in on that rockin' steed.

No, in all seriousness, the escape scene from the Shawshank Redemption. Glory defined.

Pay it Foreward (I think was the name) Where the kid gets this idea to do something nice to someone, who does something nice to two more people and so on. At the end the kid helps one of his friends who is getting beat up, thrown in dumbsters and stuff, and gets in a fight while his parents watch from the balcony. He gets stabbed and the kids all run away. In the hospital the doctor tells the parents that the kid died and such. keep in mind this kid was in grade six. Just goes to show how crappy some areas of the states are ;)

One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest

The final scene just blew me away, I have never been so touched by a movie like that my life. Just beautiful, astonishing.

I Am Sam made me cry, which is very special.

The Notebook (which is a sappy chick flick) was, regardless, very touching.

I can't remember any that actually mattered.

Pretty much all of Man on Fire. Except the whole C4 up the *** scene.

Two from Return of the King:

The Ride of the Rohirrim: Six thousand Riders of Rohan, against two hundred thousand Orcs and Trolls of Mordor. And yet, facing those odds, they still ride headlong into battle.

The Battle of the Black Gate: In the midst of the battle, a Nazgul singles Gandalf out for attack. As he stands, with no defense against the Ringwraith, a little moth flies in front of him. And then, the Eagles...

Another one that really got to me is at the end of Saving Private Ryan, when he stands at Captain Miller's grave, and asks his wife to tell him that he's lived a good life, one that was worth the sacrifice made by Miller.

The music industry is a cruel and shallow money trench where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.

ROTK- The whole closing act still sends shivers up my spine. It is just what I expected Jackson to accomplish. The perfect ending to my favorite movies.

Saving Private Ryan- This film is the visual representation horror of war to me, and is one of the few movies where the beginning and end of the movie have the same level of tremondous impact.

The Passion of the Christ-This is the only movie I have ever cried at. In particular, where I pretty much lost control was the scene in which Christ is carrying the cross, with Mary watching on, and he falls to the ground. Mary remembers when Christ was a boy and fell once, and how she ran to him and was able to help him. This time she can't. Just thinking about that scene makes me water up, so powerful.

Reservoir Dogs- The last two minutes or so, left me with such an incredible feeling of depression. Tarantino really pulled a number with this one, but its the only way the movie could have ended in my eyes.

Wrath of Khan/Generations- The former moment was done much better than the latter, but the respective deaths of Spock and Kirk, who were two of my favorite characters in cinema mean a little bit more to me than other such scenes.

Almost Famous- This is my second favorite movie after LOTR, and the one where I make the most personal connections. The scene out of the film that resounds in me is the "Tiny Dancer" scene. Not only does it feature one of my favorite artist/songs, but to me it is what music is about. Not some BS "save the world", or trite message, but as a healing tool. Music should make you feel, and this scene is a wonderful example of how it can do so.

Miracle- I'm currently talking with a friend who adores this movie, and while it wasn't the most amazing movie I've seen, the one scene where I get shivers is "Do you believe in Miracles?!? YESS!!" I think people who have played and enjoy sports understand this more than someone who hasn't. The utter thrill of victory, total euphoria, knowing you beat the supposedly bigger, better team,

The Natural- the music, the visuals, just perfect. Those who have seen it know the scene from the end, so I won't spoil it for others. However, it is what Miracle means to me, except 5 times better.

Last night I had the good fortune to watch Ray, and was able to witness one of the best acting performances I've seen. Jamies Foxx, with the exception of one brieft scene, was Ray Charles. It sounds cliched, but I was blown away, absolutely blown away by what Foxx had done. So not really a moment, but a powerful performance.

Oy...I have a lot of movie moments like this but the only two I can think of at the moment are:

All of When Harry Met Sally...
And that scene in Love Actually when the girl puts on her make-up at night just to say goodbye and it's implied she does this every night. It was sad.

Schindler's List - The shower scene, The girl and her red coat, and the execution of the jewish guy were pretty moving.
2005-02-28, 9:06 PM #18
Schindler's List immediately comes to mind and while the whole movie is tragic, the part that really got to me was then end: When he's leaving and he starts saying which objects could have bought more people.

It's the only time I've ever cried in high school.

The Terminal--when Viktor tells the INS guy that the foreigner's medicine is for his goat, when they parade Viktor in the terminal after that, and when Gupta runs with his mop towards the airplane.

Saving Private Ryan--when Capt. Miller says, "Earn this."

Close Encounters--when Roy and Gillian see Devils Tower in person for the first time and when the aliens pick Roy out of the lineup of other people

ET--the goodbye scene

Empire of the Sun--whole movie, purdy much

Prisoner of Azkaban--when the dementors are trying to suck out Sirius' spirit

Superman--when he outruns the train in Smallville, flies out of the Fortress of Solitude in his suit, saves Lois from the helicopter, jumps out of the window of the Daily Planet, chases the rockets, and the end after he turns in Lex and Otis. Pretty much anytime where the action and the music are really good.
DISCLAIMER: This is just armchair observation, not the result of many hours of deliberate study of the subject. I'm by no means an expert, but just an ignorant hick who's putting his two cents in. For that and a nickel, you can have a cup of coffee.

Igby visiting his dying mother in Igby Goes Down

The last part of Ghost World when Enid has her last conversations with Seymour and Rebecca.

The end of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

A lot of the parts in Sideways.

There is this one scene in Uprising, a made-for-TV flick.

In Warsaw, two elderly violin players are walking back from a rehearsal/performance when two German soldiers stop them. One soldier asks one of the men to play him something. He isn't satisfied by the performance, so he beats the man to death in front of his friend. The other man now has to play for the soldiers, splattered with the blood of his dead friend, and unsure of whether he will share his fate.

Just the sheer brutality of it, and seeing the trauma on the man's face, really got to me.

Eternal Sunshine -- The scene where all his memory is almost gone and the house is falling ot pieces and he's having a dialog outloud with Kate. And she goes "why'd you leave?" and he goes "i dont know I guess I just got scared" and she goes "why dont you stay this time?" Then at the end of the movie in the hallway (then again the whole movie)

Schindlers List -- When he looks at his pin and says how it could have saved more people

LOTR ROTK -- when sam picks elijah up and carries him, and again when all the hobbits say goodbye to one another

The Notebook -- The quote about summer love, and how it's like a shooting star. The scene where they dance and he shows her how to live. Um Dag the whole movie, and at the end when the old couple says their love can conquer all and he says "i'll be seeing you' < I cry every dag time he says that line! lol

Fight Club -- When he puts the gun to the guys head and then says how that guy is going to look at life different and not take it for granted.

I dont know there are soooo many movies I like. I like movies that move me, that open my eyes, that inspire me, that scare me, that motivate me. There are too many to name. I love movies in general. It's one of my passions

Hedwig and the Angry Inch was very moving. I can't pin down any specific moments, but it's a great movie. You all should see it.

I cried in ROtK when Gondor was charging Osgiliath and Pippin was singing, and then again when Frodo tells Sam to go home.

And all of Requiem for a Dream... practically that entire movie freaks me out.

The LOTR trilogy was packed with amazing stuff. I found the beauty of everything very moving.

In a way, though, it detracts from the movie because I like all the cool scenery way more than the plot.
It's not the side effects of cocaine, so then I'm thinking that it must be love

Yes, LotR is without a doubt the most beautiful film of all time.

Which imazing because there are also some very ugly images.

I agree with a whole lot of them which have been posted here, but rather than repeat them I'lla dd another one, also from Saving Private Ryan...

when mellish, i think it was, is stabbed, slowly, with his own knife. It's just possibly the most brutal scene I've ever seen...very real, in a disturbing way

I think they should have been rated R. Or at least for the second two.
The beauty is especially surprising considering Peter Jackson's reputation prior to LotR.

I agree with the SPR knife scene. That part bothered me more than anything else in the movie.

After the Eruzione goal to when they cut to the original call by Al Michaels. That was damn moving. I can only imagine how people were feeling given the world climate at the time.

Saving Private Ryan - The beach scene was something else. No need for further explanation.

Not a movie, but moving none the less, from Band of Brothers:
When the Germans are playing violins while others are cleaning up their war torn town.

When the patrol finds the camp and the scene where Winters tells Liebgot that he has to tell all the prisoners that they have to be locked up again.

Top Gun - When Goose died. :(

From TV, M*A*S*H

When Radar tells everyone that Col. Blake's plane was shot down.

When in The Two Towers the Ent army marches toward isengaurd. And in ROTK, when Pippin is singing while Faramir charges Osgiliath. My favorite scene in the whole movie.

I also agree with SPR knife scene. That part disturbed me the most out of the whole movie.

- Near the end of I Am Sam, when Laura Dern's character brings Lucy to Sam's apartment in the middle of the night.

- Yeah, the Braveheart Freedom scene.

- The end of RoTK, when Aragon's being crowned and Arwen shows up.

- In Finding Nemo, at the beginning when the Dad finds the last egg and calls him Nemo. For some reason, as obvious as that part is, it always gets to me.

- The end of Forrest Gump, where he's talking to Jenny's grave.

- The end of Big Fish.

Man, I'm a wuss. But on a less sappy, sad level, some other "powerful moments in film" for me:

- In Spider-Man 2, when he's on the train and the kids give him his mask back and say they won't tell anyone.

- In Unbreakable, when Bruce Willis realizes Samual L. Jackson's right, that whole train station scene that follows. A large part of the awesomeness of that scene is the music.

Boromir's death in FOTR. And like has been said many times, ROTK has many strong moments.

The ending of Hero, when all the central characters decide and accept their fates, except for one.

I also have to agree with Dormouse on Last Samurai.

In Saving Private Ryan where Mesh gets slowly stabbed by the German... All the people getting shot in the head and arms blown off didnt get to me like that one scene did. I couldn't stop thinking about it for days.
