That is utterly ridiculous. I cannot believe that the cops would arrest a kid based upon a story about zombies. At least all the other stupidity in schools we've read about involve people bringing physical objects (such as scissors, still stupid, but yeah) to school. This fiasco is about a STORY.

I hate the world.

Terrible.

It's that kid's freedom of speech to write what he wants. I hope the ACLU gets involved and kicks the s*** out of these people.

Nope...

Which is ridiculous. I would say that this is an infringement of your rights right there.

It's like the time they tried to expel a kid from my high school when they found his D&D map with traps placed in certain areas. It's just so...stupid! Gah...I hope they let the poor kid go. What were his grandparents even doing looking in his journal?!

The arrest came after a tip from a family member that Pool was trying to "recruit a gang to take over the school," Detective Berl Perdue said.

Why do you people automatically assume that an accused felon is telling the truth? That his own family reported him suggests that this isn't just a case of a poor helpless child being railroaded by the evil police department.

And even if this is a gross overreaction by the police, there isn't nearly enough evidence available to the public to make that judgement. I have doubts about the kid's honesty, but I'm not going to call him a criminal until he's convicted. The police/school/family deserve the same courtesy.

I think what they should do is cut the zero tolerance BS. If a person seems dangerous, first refer them to counseling and figure out where to go from there.

If the guy wrote about people in the school being killed by zombies, I would find it pretty disturbing, but not a threat.
If they're so worried by things like this, have the kid evaluated.

I'm lucky none of this happened to me. I was an effed up kid when I was ten. I was obsessed with Doom, and wrote a story for class about how me and two of my friends stole shotguns from a store and used them to rob the cash register, then went into space and killed some aliens and blew up the earth. Yikes.
The worst that happened with that was the teacher refused to read in front of the class.

I wonder what they'd think of the story I wrote for eight grade english, when I wasn't so effed up. I wrote a story about how all the monsters were pissed about people making light of them on halloween, and they killed trick-or-treating kids.

Innocent until proven guilty. It's always better to sympathize with the accused until you see evidence against them.

I wish these news organisations would provide us with more information on the stories they publish, rather than getting a handful of facts, deciding what happened for themselves, and then writing the story as if all the facts were known. Like, how did they know this kid was trying to "recruit a gang to take over the school?" Was he seen talking to other kids about it, or is the story the only evidence? What exactly was the content of these "writings"?

I dunno about you guys, but when I was younger I used to write lots of stories about the school being overrun by zombies or aliens or what-have-you, and me and my friends "organising a gang" to take it back. Heck, I even designed a role-playing game about it. If a story like that and an "anonymous tip" from a family member are the only evidence in this case, then that's an outrageous infringement upon free speech. If there's more evidence, then we've got some seriously pathetic journalists on our hands.

Either way, the whole situation is dumb...
So sayest the Writer of Silly Things!

Guys, read Argath's links. I actually couldn't recognize them as being the same story, because in Argath's link, it actually makes the boy out to be quite dangerous. How can you say the school is overreacting after reading Argath's links?

Because neither of those stories acknowledges that the story was about zombies, and none of the three says anything about the police saying it wasn't about zombies. The logical conclusion is when one person says something, and no one is refuting it, that it's probably true.

The only thing in thing in those links that seems even remotely dangerous is that he was "trying to organize a gang" which was reported by a family member. It seems pretty likely that this family member was the same nosy sack of crap that was reading his journal and then got him reported to the police over a story ABOUT ZOMBIES.

So yeah... links don't do much for me

Winchester police have arrested a George Rogers Clark High School junior whom they allege was attempting to organize an armed takeover of the school.

William Poole, 18, of 426 E. Broadway, was arrested at GRCHS Tuesday. Acting on a tip from a family member, police reported that he was attempting to "recruit a gang to take over the school," according to Detective Berl Perdue.

The threat involved the use of weapons, according to Purdue. "He didn't have a gang, but he was attempting to organize one," he said. Purdue added that no threat was made against a specific individual.

GRCHS Principal John Atkins said he could not comment on whether Poole has been in disciplinary trouble at the school due to confidentiality reasons. He did comment that, "I know him."

Police recovered writings in which Poole allegedly attempted to convince other students to participate in an armed takeover. He was being held this morning at the Clark County Detention Center. During a hearing in Clark District Court this morning, Poole's bond was increased from a $1,000 to a $5,000 cash bond based on a prosecution motion.

Atkins said he has been unable to share some information with students and staff about the incident due to the continuing investigation. Classes continued normally Wednesday and today and there have been no problems, Atkins said.

"We did not have any concern that students had weapons at school," he said. "We don't know who's included in this. That's what we're working on, to see if there were other individuals involved. ... We're not sure that there are."

The school is 100% justified if that is close to the truth. Period.

No, the school is 100% justified if that IS the truth.
2005-03-01, 3:04 PM #23
So you're saying that if there's only a 65% chance that story is the truth, the school should have just slugged it off? What about the safety of the students? They don't have to be 100% sure to act in the best interest of the majority. Due process will work this all out in the end.

Though I don't know the details, I'm willing to bet that the so called "gang gathering" was part of the story where a bunch of high school kids got together to fight the zombies. I'm making a blind assumption here, but I honestly don't think the kid is at fault here.

I hope he turns out to be innocent, and then sues the police for unlawful imprisonment. From the sounds of it, there doesn't seem to be near enough evidence to raise suspicion.

The only remotely dangerous thing that they've listed is that he was supposedly trying to organize a gang to take over the school -- whose basis of evidence hasn't been disclosed, it seems.

One of my friends in high school created a spoof poster with Cloud Stryfe on it and said "Vote for Cloud, he overthrows big business governments." He almost got expelled because the preps, who were of course all running for class council, said that he was threatening them.
I can't think of anything to put here right now.

Innocent until proven guilty. That is a precept our country is built upon. Just being accused of a crime, no matter who is accusing you, does not make you guilty.

Something doesn't seem right here. Let's say that indeed the writings were indeed plans for a violent takeover of the school. Still, these were his own private materials; he did not give these plans to anyone else (as far as the links are concerned). So it's illegal for me to think naughty thoughts? Oh noes, I wrote them down for myself. Does that mean that if I wrote that "I want to blow up XX because XX happened to me at school today", I would be be held accountable for this in a court of law?

Their SOLE evidence seems to be these documents, and nothing more. I find it horriying that one can't write how they feel, or hell, evil plans because they got burned one day.

Ah, I love how overreactive our society is becoming.
