Lets haven't played Perfect Dark so don't know. I liked Doom II alot but haven't really played DF. I have to say that the UT engine is great. The bot system and the gameplay are great. I haven't played QIII so I wouldn't know what it's like.

Also I have to say that the GEO MOD engine is my most fav and Source too.

UT > QIII by far. Engine and gameplay wise IMO.
Think while it's still legal.

Final Fantasy VII has the best engine. The battles are awesome.

I wonder why more companies don't use geo mod  . That thing is so rad, but out of the list i'd have to say Unreal is pretty good engine :)

The gameplay part is completely subjective...but the Engine for Q3 is amazing. I'm sorry, but there's a reason that it's lived so long as it has. And the UT(1999) engine is long dead. The Q3 engine is just now seeing its dying days.

Extremely good point.

IMO, DOOM2 and DF were practically identical. Q3 > UT, and MotS > PD.

Dark forces had way bigger sprites than doom. Also true 3d objects.

Doom had multiplayer ;)

Because games that run on a certain engine is crappy, this doesn't mean the engine is bad. Prehaps Doom3 could be an example. Some people disliked the game, gameplay and the atmosphere. But they shouldn't say, "OMG DOOM3 ENGINE BLOWS CAUSE THE GAME IS BAD!!11" I doubt the engine is only capable of games featuring fighting monsters down dark hallways and rooms set on Mars. I've seen some neat stuff coming from that engine.

Aurora > most (Neverwinter Nights engine)

Engines aren't all about the graphics, y'know.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

The new Unreal engines rock so much, even the old one does, when it comes to Deus Ex.

Especially editingwise.

The only reason Q3 engine is barely dying is because it's hacked and mangled and is generally a big pooy mess.

UT was what it was. It's its own engine. Not some improvements built on other improvements built on other improvements dating back to the first Quake.

UT > Q3

Well, I could be wrong, but I think the UT2004 engine is an updated version of the UT engine, which I know for a fact is an updated version of the original Unreal engine.

Yeah it pretty much is. Uses the same editor too.

I'd have to say UT2k4 is my favorite engine so far. It's not the best graphics on the market, but so far it's the best graphics/performance. What's the point of having the best looking game in the world if you have to turn down everything on minimum to play it? You can still play UT2k4 on max settings on fairly old systems.

The engine blows because it's Quake based![/Unrealfanboy]

MotS vs. Perfect Dark - Perfect Dark. While MotS supports editing and scripting better, Perfect Dark supports alpha mapping. Also I don't remember Perfect Dark's colored lighting being so atrocious.

Dark Forces vs. Doom 2 - Dark Forces. DF's engine supports some sort of pseudo-scrolling parallax monstrocity for looking up and down and it had basic support for 3D models. DF may have won the battle, but it lost the war - it was released around the same time Quake came out, which makes it pretty outdated.

Quake 3 Arena vs. Unreal Tournament - I don't have an opinion. Quake 3 supported curved surfaces, but those weren't remotely useful in the long run. In fact I can't even remember why I was so impressed by them in the first place. The difference between Quake 2 and Quake 3 is microscopic compared to the differences between Quake 3 and Doom 3.

Just to clarify, it's not Quake-based. Doom 3 is a total rewrite except for console, which was derived from the Quake 3 Appwizard id wrote for their licensees.

Q3 wasn't really mangled up until a few titles (Call of Duty comes to mind). Heck, for the most parts, the games that came out could've been mods...they just would've been free :p
