The oldest thing in your house.
2005-03-04, 6:38 PM #1
I asked my mum about what the oldest thing in the house is after watching the antiques roadshow. She showed me an old pocket-watch, and a picture of a distantish relative who died in world war one. She said there are probably other older things in the house, but she did not know what they were.

So, post some of the older things that are in your house.

In my house, we have a violin that was made sometime in the 1600's.

There are also some air that's some billions of years old.

And then there's the computer; it's far too old for its own good.

I read this thread and I instantly knew I was going to post that. Weird. My dad is 52 (give or take a year or two), so he's old.

My parents have a few albums on vinyl that are pretty old. Oh, oh...there's a tattered, leather recliner that used to belong to my grandfather. Now that's old.

I couldn't care less about antiques.

Treasures of Science, History and Literature for the Study and the Fireside, Moses Folsom and J.D. O'Connor, Chicago: Moses Warren, 1879.

I bought this book for $10 at a school library book sale in 1999. Second edition, fully illustrated (one of my favorite illustrations is "The Victim of Alcohol" and shows a man lying face down with snakes and demons(?) attacking him). It has all kinds of weird, dated information. Here's a quote:
Quote:
How to Prevent Accidents.
1. Never sleep near charcoal; if drowsy at any work where charcoal fires are used, take the fresh air.
2. Never leave horses unhitched and without an attendant in the street.
3. Never throw orange, lemon or apple peel on the sidewalk, nor broken glass into the street.

It goes on like that for a while. It's a bit over 500 pages and covers topics from "How to read your Holy Bible within one year" to a chart listing how long it takes to digest various foods (so you can plan bathroom breaks during the work day).

I hve a small oil vase, earthenware, completely intact, from around 900 BC - 400 BC, according to the archeological parchment that came with it. I had it dated, and it is authentic. It was unearthed near Jerusalem. I

Our house is filled with antiques. Our dining room table is from the 1700s, we have tons of family photos and two gold watches from the early 1800s that are seriously pimp. One was a retirement gift from a railroad company, the other is worn down and belonged to our relative that was rich as poop. My dad is 55. We have 2 painting from the late 1700's about 5 from 1800's, we have a whole furniture set from the 1800's, marble chess set from the 1800s, I have a buddy lee doll in perfect condition, a cracked one was sold on ebay for $8,000. We have more junk from the 1800's than I can name off.
We've got a confederate officer's sword from the civil war, a flag from the civil war, and a gas mask from ww1.
It took a while for you to find me; I was hiding in the lime tree.

Just some mud that's as old as the Earth.

Now I've got to clean all this sodding mess.

In the 1600s, there was a mini ice age and the wood in trees grew much more slowly and densely than normal and instruments made from this wood produce a much better sound, Stradivarius most famously.

A roman coin that's about 2200 years old. Other than that, I have a whole lot of atoms that have been around since the beginning of time.
