Best and worst game demos
2005-03-05, 11:47 PM #1
post what you think are the best and worst game demos that you have played.

Best: The JK demo (fuel station) kicked a**. It was a great level, and I got the game quickly after I played it. The on;y downer was that the demo really raised my expectations: I expected every map in full version JK to be as good as level 9, but was a little dissapointed when some fell short architecturally and design-wise.

Worst: The AVP2 SP demo. When I played it, I wasn't too impressed. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good, either, it was mediocre, IMO The thing that made me get the full version was the fact that I got the opportunity to play the full version at my local best buy b/c they had it set up on a computer there. Yes, the AVP2 demo does not do the full version justice, at all.

You're crazy. :D I'd rate levels 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 14, 15, and 17 all better than 9. :p

meh, I'm not convinced. I loved the big pipes section of level 9, after editing JK I know how hard it is to do perfect pipes, and how relatively easy it is to do other types of architecture. They had pipes in JK level 2, but nothing like level 9.

best: Mafia ... how many GTA style games actually put a demo out? EXACTLY

worst: MOHPA MP demo that was just sad especially after the less than impressive SP demo... WAY TO GET PEOPLE TO WANT TO BUY YOUR GAME!

The Mafia demo WAS probably one of the best I've ever played. It had help from the fact the Mafia was one of the best games ever.

The Heroes of Might and Magic II demo. I've spent so much time on that demo, it's crazy. It has just about everything in the full game in the demo, but it's only one map.

I am in agreement about JK, very rarely does a demo MAKE me go out and buy a game. It's happened with.... (now let me see...)

Jedi Knight
Deus Ex
Quake 3 Arena (same as JK - best level in the game!)
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (PC demo - bough for PSX for cheapness)
Worms - hooked from the start.

WORST Demos is harder, mainly because I don't remember them; they were so bad!

Actually, I really can't think of any.

The Unreal Tournament demo kicked arse. The Onsalught map they included is one of the best in the game.
The Massassi-Map
There is no spoon.

Dammit I forgot that one!

Best: Half-Life Uplink, with Jedi Knight in second place.

Worst: Gawd knows!

I had really lost interest in FPSs before I downloaded the Call of Duty demo(s), and I still don't have alot of interest in WW2 stuff. But I played through each level about 5 times on different difficulties, then went out and got the full game within days.

Very fun game. And the demos did a great job of convincing me.

As for the worst demo...yeah, no idea.

Best Demo: WarCraft 3. Seriously, it included all the elements that you needed to want to play the game.

Worst: Toughie...MOH:PA prolly.

Best for me would have to be Serious Sam.
This Space Intentionally Left Blank.
2005-03-06, 5:14 AM #14
Best: Republic Commando
Worst: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter. I had to reformat my HD two times back in 1998 because I installed and ran it. Though that could have been because of my comp, but still
Star Wars: TODOA | DXN - Deus Ex: Nihilum

Best: Normality

Made me want to buy the game. ALOT. Even though it was a hassle to get my computer to run it at the tiem because it was dos game.

Best: Tribes: Vengeance

If it weren't for me having a slow connection, I would have bought it and I'd be playing it RIGHT NOW. That game is seriously the best team based FPS I've ever played. It's fun, and ACTION PACKED.
2005-03-06, 6:14 AM #16
Best: Rebuplic Commando

Best: Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. I have MASTERED this thing. I can go through the level without fireing a single shot (At a person. I still break lights and stuff) or throwing any objects. Sometimes I have to break out my snicky shocker or airfoil, but from there it's all interrogation and stabbity action.

Worst: X-Wing vs TIE Fighter. Absolute crap. It actually turned me away from the game :S

One of the best demos I've played would have to be the Freelancer demo, I've been wanting to buy that game for sooo long now, but when I've had it in my hands to buy it, I never quite had enough money to really afford it.

Best: The New UT2k4 Demo that lets you play online with people that have the full version, Painkiller, Chaos Theory, Theif.
Think while it's still legal.

Freelancer's only like, 20 bucks :x

Oh and worst--Myth 2 I think it was, maybe Myst 3. Now that I think about it--the thing killed your comp.

Half-Life Uplink, definately. I play the absolute crap out of the demo, almost as much as I spent on the actual game when I eventually bought it.
2005-03-06, 8:01 AM #21
I don't know about best demo, but the worst was easily the single-player Battlefield 1942 demo. That thing was so bug-ridden, it was ridiculous. Nothing worked at all. Thankfully, the full version of the game was far better.

I can't think of any bad demos off hand, but as far as best demos go, I'd list the Painkiller and Far Cry demos. I hadn't even heard of either game before I played the demo.
I bet you think that's funny, don't you.

The full Deus Ex demo was excellent... Two whole missions. And the missions are long!

Supposedly the Anachronox demo was bad, but I liked it enough to buy the game.
I'm just a little boy.

I liked Anachronox demo... really made me want to get the full game.

I agree with Naythn. The Serious Sam demo is about the only thing that led to me buying the game. In second place is Half-life Uplink.

OHHHHH yeahhhh. That game rocked my socks off. I got the demo, and because you could do so much in the demo, despite finishing the little section of campaign, I thought I'd just continue getting money/doing shipping work for a while... But once I got the full version I realize how much more awesome it really is... In the demo, you can't even leave the New York system, which is just one of about 6 systems in Liberty, which is just one of 4 sectors in the entire game world.... not to mention the border systems like Sigma, Tau, Gamma, and Omicron, of which there are about 10 or so.... think...

There are also many many many more ships and weapons to choose from... the campaign, while sorta simple in storyline, keeps you interested and has a very nice menacing/mysterious air at times...... mmmm good.

Plus, the full version opening cutscene, which shows the history of the sirius sector settlement after the conflict between the alliance and the coalition.......ROCKS. so. Hard.!.!.!

Freelancer has good music too, nice effects, beautiful starscapes and nebulae etc.

get it get it get it get it please please please. it rocks. :) once you beat it, it can get boring fast, playing on past the campgaign (which you can do)... unless you set a goal...I wanted to just explore all the border systems, which I pretty much did....

It's great, when you enter a new sector, to pull up the patrol routes path and see where ships have been flying, and then go to points where they intersect like in the middle of a gas cloud, and you can find wrecked ships or huge gas miners or whatever, and you can sometimes loot really rare andexpensive weapons from the hulks... oh man. rock on.

I decided to buy the most expensive ship in the game, which I found in [a certain sector]... it cost 700something thousand, as opposed to the ship you start with which costs like 2000 :). You have to buy a large shipping vessel and haul diamonds and stuff around for a while to get all that money, or find wrecked mercenary vessels of some famous Ace, and tractor in his uber-god-weapon-o'-doom and sell it.

It's just awesome man, go for it.

ho hum.

Though I never played it, the BGII demo is probably bad. If what I heard is correct, it's the first dungeon, where you start in the full game. When I first played it, I almost regretted buying the game until I got past the first dungeon.

Best - JO
Worst - no idea, i don't do Demos often

Jedi Outcast was interesting since the level was not in the full version. I don't download too many demos, but that one would probably be my favorite.
Very funny Scotty. Now beam down my clothes.

I can't really remember what the best and worst demos I've played in recent years but I do say that I REALLY miss those grand old days of shareware. Make no mistake - shareware and demos aren't the same thing. Shareware was great because it offered WAY more than a demo did. Remember Doom shareware, where you got to play 1 of the 3 episodes of the game for free? Now of days with demos, you only get one measely little level that only lasts like 5-10 minutes. I understand its only meant to "wet your appetite" but I want something that should at least take a day to play.
The cake is a lie... THE CAKE IS A LIE!!!!!

I have to agree that THPS2 had an excellent demo. At least if I remember right. I think it was that Marseille level that was a competition in the full game. I don't think I spend so much time with any other demo.

The worst. Hmm, Gothic. It was full of bugs that the full version didn't have.
