I want one of these
2005-03-06, 1:58 AM #1
They're so small and pretty!

I'm bored of the Linux vs Windows arguments:

Lets have a MAC FIGHT!!

<.<
>.>

Joking aside, when I've graduated and got a job, this is first on my list of Toys Martyn Wants Lots (tm). I figure for home computing (not gaming) it'll be ideal, and take up minimum space in what will likely be not a very big house.

And it's so small and pretty!!

Wow, that is genuinely very cool for people that move their computers about a lot, like LAN tournaments and the like. Only downside..well..it's a mac.

Generally, though, if ye move ye box around a lot, you go for small form-factor cases, like the Shuttle ones. They look purdy, but they're not for me.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.
2005-03-06, 4:44 AM #4
They're reasonably well priced too! I won't move me box around so much, but I won't have a big first house: and if I can afford one of those with a TFT monitor I'll be laughing.

Get the barebones and you can do a good upgrade for like, 150 pounds more, probably. About 100 USD for memory, and you can get a new laptop HDD (which is the kind it uses) for fairly cheap. Then it'll perform really well.

At least get the memory upgrade. The thing only comes with 256MB

:(

I'd only be using it as a office-suite type machine for work: so it won't need any extras probably. For my house I've already got a monster hand me down TV and DVD player with 5.1, so it won't be getting used for that...

But damn it's secksy.
2005-03-06, 5:10 AM #8
Well the reason I say upgrade the memory is because 256mb is abysmal, really, even for day to day stuff!

But it's up to you.

Fair enough: Geoff runs on 256 quite happily for everything (except games - but he's only got SIS crappy shared video memory) - and his processor's not so shibby as the mac.

To be fair though, you'll probably know better than me ;)
2005-03-06, 5:35 AM #10
Thats pretty neat actually.

I've used Macs a few times, they're pretty cool if you're going to stick to the realm of video, audio, or graphics production.

There aren't that many games for them that I like, though.
2005-03-06, 7:47 AM #11
Can't beat the price though...

400 pounds with the upgrade...I mean, that's like 650 US (maybe 700) for a mac, fully functional, and extremely decent in performance.

But hey, if you think you can get along on 256, go ahead. I just remember the jump from 256 to 512...phenomenal, even just using windows.

500 dollars for a Mac which doesn't do much except surf the internet is sort of a waste of time. Especially with such low specs. Macs are meant for strenious video editing. Sound editing, or things similar in nature. This requires lots of processing power, ram, and cooling fans. This Mac lacks all of the above.

This mac is decent with its processor, and with a quick RAM upgrade, is ready for some good usage.

Not bad, really.

You misunderstand Kirbs: I'll be using it for surfing the internet, writing documents, and not taking up much space in my new (and likely pokey) house :)

MAC FIIIIIIGHT!

*throws a G5 at Martyn*

Eh. Neat concept..but I don't think it will go far. It looks like a hybrid of a desktop and laptop. And I think you still have to get peripherals (monitor, kb/mouse, etc.)

one sound port?

Cool gadget, but I can't think of anything I could use it for. In fact, if you gave me one for free I'd have nothing to do but sell it or throw it away.

Its called "uniked kingdom of great britain and ireland" for a reason.... ireland is acctually called the republic of ireland for a reason. They're independant, they have their own currency, before the euro it was the punt. But northern ireland is still part of briatin and uses the pound
nope.

Graphics ATI Radeon 9200 with 32MB of DDR SDRAM with AGP 4X support

Single biggest reason why it sucks. My laptop has better video graphics than that.

No thanks, just another crap comp from Apple.
2005-03-06, 12:42 PM #24
What difference does the video card make when you won't be playing any games on it? :p
2005-03-06, 12:48 PM #25
If you're not gonna play games with it, what can you make with it? With one single soundport, that kinda leaves out sound editing. You can do graphics and text processing. But what's the point? The thing probably costs around 1000 canadian or possibly more. It doesn't come with a monitor - that's another 500. If you don't have a USB keyboard and mouse, you gotta buy those seperately too. Why not just buy a machine that can do everything for less than a third that price?

You never do audio with stock sound cards. You could use a Firewire interface (like Motu for example).

I've seen them for $650-700 Canadian. I still agree you could probably do more with a PC at that price. But these are still some of the first affordable Macs.

...It costs 500 USD. Seriously, that's a great price, even for a PC. I'm surprised it doesn't have some onboard crap (or at least, iirc it isn't onboard).

Why does everyone hate Apple?

Oh, right, it's the 'cool' thing to do. Missed that memo.

It's a barebones Mac. It's not meant to be a top of the line gaming rig.

I thought loving apple was the in thing these days.

I don't like apple because they charge triple or quadruple what other companies would charge for the same products with limited functionality.

500$ USD is a so-so price for a PC. And a PC has more uses than this, even though it's less compact.

I'll change my mind about apple when they start releasing decent products at realistic prices.

500 USD is a great price--for a prefab. And a prefab PC can do a lot less than this Mac Mini, trust me. An extra 50 or so USD and it can do even more.

Seriously, this is a great deal. Even if it is proprietary.

I guess I would love a comp that size, if it weren't so bad in the graphics department :(

Maybe for university.

ignoring all the previous geek-tech.... the size and functionality for what you want is funky.

it looks pretty sweet too.

Or I could spend $450 more, and get:

A. Way faster processor
B. Faster video card
C. Better sound output
D. TV Out
E. Built In Speakers
F. 15.4" screen (widescreen)
G. More ram
H. Runs windows (Aka plays games and stuff)
I. Larger hard drive
J. Memory card reader
K. Built in wireless
L. More USB ports

And finally,
M. Helluva lot more portable friendly.

What is it? It's a FREAKIN LAPTOP. Yay for crappy Apple products!

450 dollars is a LOT of money. Just because you can afford it doesn't mean everyone can. This obviously isn't aimed at the market for people who are into laptops...that's what PowerBooks are for. This is meant as a portable type of mac, though why I don't know, but it's still a good deal regardless of shape/size/portability.

The point is you still need a:

Mouse
Keyboard
Screen
Probably speakers
Wireless card (if you use it)

Which will run you up quite a bit more than $500.

Thus, the difference of $450 is not that much, especially for all the other extras you get. And if you wanted, you could get a similarly configured laptop for LESS than that mac + the required equipment to use it.
