A Compaq? Maybe their laptops are better than their desktops...

And wow, not a good deal at all.

You can get much more modern laptops (not "good laptops" but more modern and much better tha that) for around $400 after some rebates.

uhh.. not from what I can see. here's some examples.

These are comparable laptops (mine's slightly better than the last two and slightly worse than the first one)

And I payed less...

Show me examples of what you're talking about. And as far as the size, I'm not too concerned about that.. I like the larger ones anyway.

And that's brand new with a larger screen.

Laptops sell incredibly high on eBay. I have a few friends who buy old laptops at local places for $200 or so and in turn sell them on eBay for $400+.

uhh.. that's not even verified.. did you notice that's a forum. and there's links to an ebay bid with weird stuff going on there.. Something's fishy. I wouldn't be so sure about that.

[Ok, well there's a link to an actual ad, but that looks like an exception, not a rule.. I also notice that lacks a CD/RW drive.. Mine's got a DVD/CD-RW combo.]

You can get 1ghz P3 laptops here in Montreal for $99 Canadian.

Hmm. 1GHZ PIII > 2.8 GHz Celeron. Sounds good. I don't know what those things battery lives are, but the CPU is sure better than a celeron.

No.

One way or the other, a new 2.8 GHz Celeron is still Pentium 4 core. Which means it's still going to be faster. I believe the P4 Celeron still has the same cache size as a stock P3 too.

For a laptop the Pentium-M is what you really want. It uses up very little power and it's essentially an XScale processor with a Pentium 3 code translation layer of some sort. Very cool, low-voltage and performs way better than the Pentium 4 at the same clock speeds.

when OCed to the same clock, It also performs much better than the FX-55.

I want stats on that. I don't believe that for a damn second.

I was actually just spouting a bunch of anti-Celeron fanboyism. :p Still, I think the PIII is way more efficient. The whole P4 CPU is line less efficient. It's just capable more greater clock speeds. Sort of a quality over quantity type thing. Efficiency wise, the PIII > Clelron or PIV. I think the PIV's finally caught up with the speed of the 800-1000MHz PIII's when they got to 1.6 GHz.

It's more complicated than that.

well.. I'm coming live from the new laptop... and thus far, I'm quite happy with it. :D (and I still think I got a good deal. But anyways... Now that I've sparked a debate over intel processors... I'm going to go off into my corner now. :p

uhh... it doens't have AOL on it. at all. and I'm glad. I've got DSL through Qwest, and I'm networked to a wireless router.

(oh, and it didn't come with the wireless card, but I have a D-Link Wireless USB adapter)

Well that's nice. Now let's see them port that to the Intel 64 chipsets.

Pentium-M/Centrino is a totally new core. There really isn't any comparison. In addition there is further room for improvement in the architecture while the Pentium 4 and related processors are pretty much about to max out.

Don't get me wrong, there are some things the Pentium-M can't do (like Hyperthreading). But since there are extremely few single programs that can use multiple processors effectively there is little to no benefit. Pentium-M is ideal for low power consumption, low heat profiles and... to put it simply... gaming.

While I'm pretty happy with my Inspiron XPS, the XPS Generation 2 absolutely pounds it to dust in every single benchmark. It has a 2.0-someodd GHz Pentium-M. This has a 3.4 GHz desktop Pentium 4.
