how come all I EVER see on the showcase forum is GUN models.... I mean, don't get me wrong, the are excellent quality, but i just think they are boring... Every day I see a new post in there, and I am like.."Yay! more showcase..... oh.... GUNS!.... hurray". It seems a bit excessive to me.

They should start modelling toothbrushes.

heh. It's because guns are fun to model and are always right in your face in any shooting game. I'd make levels but those take longer.

Make cars, and boats, and ...crumpled up paper. And computers....filing cabitnets and trees, street signs. Horses!

I agree, Spiral. To me, one JK level showcase is worth about 15 or 20 gun showcases, 50+ art showcases, 75 photography showcases, and 100 or more text-only showcases. If someone is showcasing a tileable, decent texture with dimensions in powers of 2, then that's a good showcase too. (Zully is the only person known to do this in like... 3 years).

95% of showcases these days are utter crap. It's all art, photography, and poems.

I don't agree Freelancer. Massassi isn't only modding for a long time now and a lot of people have different hobbies. Actually I like Massassi exactly for the diversity of things that are showcased. If someone showes some good photographies or a good piece of art that's exactly what I am looking for, since these works need critics, too, and you get a lot here at Massassi.

But I have to agree spiral that there are much to many gun showcases How many of them make it ingame? Sure, guns are a lot easier to model than something organic and more fun to make than a trash bin.
At least for the majority, I don't care for guns at all But that's just my personal preference. After all, I click em away, so they aren't disturbing me.

Most certainly. Variation is much more interesting than just editing, whether it's gun models or maps. I've showcased, maps, models, pictures, poems, and websites on the Showcase forum, and I'd hate it if I was limited to just one of those genres. Everything in moderation - do that, and the Showcase forum might just be interesting for *extended* periods of time.

Prehaps if the SOTD was back online, people may be more willing to produce work to get that title.

I remember the first... and last... time I got SotD... A few years ago.. Back when I actually made levels.

Gun models are really the perfect things to model. You can add a ton of detail and make it look beautiful, or you can make it simple and still decent if you're not that skilled. There are always a ton of reference pictures, many detailed, and most guns if they aren't ficticious have been done before and people know them inside and out. Also, gun models have a higher chance of actually being put in a game and used in a mod than most other things since this site is, after all, about editing fps's.

The majority of the threads on the Showcase Forum aren't about guns.

And the rest...

Only 4 out of like 25 are levels...

It's the day that threads become a currency, and have an exchange rate with other threads that I no longer want to visit massassi...

Seriously, just because you don't enjoy poetry doesn't mean that those poetry threads are any LESS important than one of the threads YOU value. The Showcase forum isn't an entertainment forum, one where you visit just to be amazed by someone's great levels, it's a forum for people looking for commentary on their models. Shred and I, for instance, post our models looking for feedback and suggestions to improve them. Shred's stormtrooper model went through about 4 or 5 different versions and textures before anyone was completelly happy. I've remodeled entire weapons because of the showcase forum, and learned a whole lot about modeling in general. The showcase isn't FOR you, who doesn't post. It's for those of us who post to get feedback on our work.

How often are gun models impressive? I mean, it's all been done a billion times before anyways, it seems pretty pointless.

I'd like to see more art and levels. Drawings and digital art are some of the best showcases when the person has talent...Dumb stories, poetry and websites are just about the worst.

WTF!? Why in the world are 'dumb stories' 'poetry' and 'websites' all the 'worst!?' To me it seems you just don't have enough patience to even think about assisting those people with their showcases.

Since when do you decide what people use the showcase for? I don't go there to help people, I go there to check out artwork/levels etc. It just so happens I find stories/websites/poetry to be stupid and boring...at least the ones posted here.

I have to agree with Spiral... there's a lot of very talented modellers here... and 75-80% of them make untextured gun models that will never see the light of day. I wanna see more character models, like Shreds.... maybe some cars and ships would be nice, sure.... but what I really would like to see is a modeller make prefabs and the like.... maybe doorjams, lighting fixtures, random furnature, exploding canisters.... you know, things to populate new levels.

And just for the record, this is the subtext of the Showcase Forum:

You can be quite rude sometimes, Freelancer. I resorted to nothing, it's just that I thought massassi had a bit more taste than to complain about topics that THEY'D rather not see in the showcase forums. Bite me if you think anyone can 'debunk' my freaking OPINION.

well.. if there are a lot of novice errors in levels that are being showcased... that is the purpose to the showcase forum. Why not mention it?

and I know it's not just for levels.. I just posted today about my halloween stuff...

and i'm not saying Levels are better than guns.. I'm not saying that the gun models suck.. i am just saying that there are alot of gun model threads...

I mean what are you looking for when u post a gun model, you can't get critism about lighting.. you can't get critism about textures... you can't get critism about barely anything..

I could see someone saying "the barrel is too short".. but then the modeler can just be like "it's supposta be like that".

I don't mind what people post in the showcase. My only problem is that they don't specify what they are showcasing in their titles. It's always fascinating when you click on a post with a title that sounds uber cool, however ends up being a 4 verse poem.
