The Nintendo DS goes online!

From Gamespot

Quote:
Iwata announced that, four months after its release, the DS is going online. Starting later this year, Nintendo "will provide users with a link to other players across the country or around the world," according to a statement from Nintendo. DS owners will be able to connect to Nintendo's online service, which will be free, from any wireless hotspot using the DS's wireless connectivity, and play other owners of the dual-screen portable online. He said Nintendo's online infrastructure for the device--i.e. servers--was "already in place."

As further icing on the DS cake, Iwata also revealed that Nintendo is developing a new Animal Crossing title specifically tailored for online play. He also showed off the DS's offline Wi-Fi capabilities in a "spontaneous" eight-player Mario Kart DS game. Iwata also updated the audience on the DS's sales figures to date--over 4 million to date.

Same here. I mean I was dissapointed with the lack of release games, but Nintendo always pulls through in the end. Most of the awesome games won't come out till late this year, but they look awesome and I am willing to wait. Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles (Not sure if its the same as on gamecube, I think it's just the name of it for now, but I know it will be 3D), a new 3D Zelda, a new Mario, Rayman DS (3D), and Sonic DS (3D as well). I don't really care about all the 2D games like Yoshi-Touch and Go, because if I want 2D I'll rush to my GBA. I mean if it's 2D but it uses the touchpad in a new and cool way (WarioWare) I might be interested, but for the most part I don't care for the 2D DS games. Plus with Mario Kart and Animal Crossing going to be online, that's awesome. Maybe even an online Super Smash Bros in the future?

You guys sure this isn't just for japan?

They already have stuff like this over there, but Nintendo hotspots like that never seem to make it to the states.

Doesn't need to be any kind of special thing. Just needs to be an 802.11b AP that's hooked to an internet connection.

It's just a purely internet based matchmaking service like XBox Live. It just uses the DS's 802.11b adapter to connect to a network.

Hot ****! This may push me to get a DS. I mean, I always said "If only Animal Crossing was online..."

We'll have to see what the new GBA is like. And what happens in the PSP market. Most likely...I'm probably going to get a DS if there are great titles out there with good support for this (as I'm sure there will be)

The adapter? I could fit 5 of them in my pocket and not even notice I'm carrying anything. They aren't big at all.

Damn! That is great! ALl the DS needs is a addictive MMORPG, and a intense MP FPS and I'm sold.

Animal Crossing and Metroid Hunters? *gets his by rocks*

Also you don't need an adapter. The DS was made with the WiFi capabilities, so you just need to be near a hot spot to play.

I thought the controls was the best part of Hunters. It made it so much easier to aim using the thumb nub/pen-thingy then using a D-pad on a controler. I hate playing FPS's on console, but Hunters on the DS was a breath of fresh air.
Think while it's still legal.

I hate hunters. I like the feeling of having an analog stick for movement and one for aiming. But Goldeneye may yet surprise.

Never said you needed to buy an adapter, just said its adapter uses 802.11b, implying its adapter is integrated.

Ha! That makes more sense. I read it as '802.1lbs'

I'm still sad the DS doesn't work with a GC/GBA link cable... :(

Yes, but it'd be extremely laggy and would drain the battery fairly quickly as the connections started to chain together.
