Okay. If you could choose just one foreign language to be planted in your mind (without the time and effort to learn it), what would it be? Like instantly uploading "knowledge" in the Matrix movies.

Probably I would choose Japanese or Chinese. I can't decide. :(

German....so I could finally figure out what my Dad and Grandpa are rambling about...without the effort to learn it....

Japanese, not because I particularly care about Japan, or particularly want to speaj it, but because it's apparently the hardest to learn, so if I ever had to, I wouldn't have to learn it.

I would prol' want Klingon! :D

No, out of all seriousness, it would be a tough one between German and Spanish. German because it sounds cool and I love some of the words, and Spanish because of its growing usefulness in this country (US).

German or Russian. I cant decide.

Elvish. I would also force all of my friends to pick Elvish, and we'd have our own language thing
2005-03-12, 10:01 AM #13
I would want to speak German simply because I love the sound of it, but I'd probably go with Spanish because of its wider utility.

Most certainly Japanese. Although Chinese might also be interesting.

German - I am taking it in school, so I already know some of it, but to be fluent would be awesome... It is the most common language in Europe, and it is simply sounds the coolest, too.

Spanish - So I can read my Grandfather's books and know what a little less than half of my family is talking about.

What? It sounds the coolest by far. What if it's name wasn't elvish, but instead TROBGLUNK, or CRUNKSPEEK. Then would it be cool?
2005-03-12, 11:52 AM #28
German or Latin.

With German, it sounds so cool. But Latin is the basis of a lot of languages, and would help you learn them (french, spanish).

Tough choice.

I think Chinese (traditional form) is harder to learn, but I'm not sure.

I would either choose Japenese because I love the culture and I want to travel there maybe even live there for a year or two or German so I can understand Rammstein and my uncle at times.

Hebrew. Because I want to have the fun of "manually" learning Japanese for myself.

...and the sad thing is, I'm not sarcastic at all.

And whoever said Elvish, I assume you meant one of Tolkien's languages, so I'll point out that there are actually two: Sindarin and Quenya. (In addition to Adunaic, Khuzdul, the Black Speech, and so on... but the first two are the Elven languages.)

If you're really interested in made-up languages, you might want to check out the conlang listserv at http://listserv.brown.edu/archives/conlang.html --- note, though, that it's for the discussion of personal/art/whatever languages (like Quenya), not international languages like Esperanto.

Back to the original topic, I might say German, too, but since I'm already halfway there anyway, I'd rather pick a language I don't know at all.
