"Dedicated" JK server?
2004-04-28, 5:33 PM #1
Hello folks,

I know there is no dedicated server for JK. I am wondering if it´s possible to create one with COGs.
So, I would like to know if it´s possible to have this:

(1)Invisible character for the serrver. So, the character for the server would be "Server" or something and wouldn´t show in the game
(2)No rendering, to allow a low end do the job as server
(3) Your idea here.

Thank you,
André

JK's netcode is not stable enough to allow a server to run for too long, plus there is a lot of other problems. Both me and Cool Matty tried to do it, and, well, it didn't work.

Feel free to prove me wrong though. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

Reboot the computer once every 12 hours, and host a public server on Qtracker/QtUplink (www.qtracker.com). You could easily make the hosts avatar invisible and invincible via COG. You would probably want to keep other players from bumping in to you as well. It wouldn't be a true dedicated server, but it would work well enough. It would be ideal if there were an East and West server for the US and servers for other countries as well, but it's unlikely to find enough people who are willing.

You'd have to manually reboot, and the server didn't always last 12 hours. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Plus there is no way to automate starting the game, that I know of anyway.

That's what I meant...manually rebooting. Far from a true dedicated server, but if the system is reliable, it should run JK/MotS for 12 hours easily. I've had JK/MotS servers running on this system for 12 hours straight with no problems. Of course, no one is going to join my elite 26400 connection server.

1. Yeah you could do that.
2. No, that's hard coded in the engine. Cog can only do so much.
3. Give up? It won't happen, it is just too much effort to keep it up.

You know, in theory, a program might be ablt to be written to handle such a request. Think about a home networking hub. It's not really much of a computer. It just sends packets back and forth to their designated destinations. So, if I program were written to act like a Networking hub, then a few other things could be added (such as current level, etc). . .

Nevermind, I think I just thought of a major flaw. Back to the drawing board.
