We should have a special forum for discussion and debating in a mature, civilized way. (i. e. where flaming, trolling, spamming, making stupid comments, etc. is more strictly not allowed) It would be a great place for discussing sensetive issues (i. e. abortion, gay marraige) without fear of a n00b coming in and messing it all up.

There's no way you could make something like that work.

Does it matter? He is the king of spain, whoop de doo!

Jeeze, such animosity, go for a time out.

However, I disagree with the idea because I think these forums already are properly equiped for debating. Sure you get nonsense and non sequiters (sp?), but many times I find the debates go pretty well, and by "pretty well" I mean as well as they can. Yes things can get ugly and derailed, but I think for the most part intellegent discussion is present.

I think the Lord of a Quartet is quite right.

And the kind of dumbasses that should be outlawed from that forum make their appearance in the first two replies!

I think it's a great idea, somewhere where the rules are more strictly enforced.

yah but then what becomes of the discussion forum? i mean, why have 2 forums with the same purpose?

and what constututes a serious duscussion anyway; would a thread be closed and moved there for being "to searious"; would trolls run rampiod in this forum on the bases that "if the writer wanted this to be a serious post he would have posted it in the mature discussion forum?; would curude and lude language be allowed in the "mature forum"? i donno... i think it is a bad idea.
Laughing at my spelling herts my feelings. Well laughing is fine actully, but posting about it is not.

I've been thinking about something like this for a while. Basically a place where debate was encouraged, and also a way so that people who want to stay out of such threads could easily avoid them. The rules concerning flames and insults would be very strict, although punishment would simply being loss of access to this particular forum, not banning from the entire forums.

Judging from the responses to this thread though, I'm guessing it probably wont happen.

Why not DS? The people who don't want it can sit around and play in the mud, and the rest of us can have civil debates. It's win-win.

You're thinking about it the wrong way. It wouldnt be the "mature" forum, it would be kind of like an expansion of the old religious discussion forum, except expanded to include philosohpical, political, and scientific concepts. There are plenty of forums that have both a general discussion and a debate forum (the SA Forums are a good example) and they are no less for it.
