Connecting to the Internet

Technically the Internet is free, all that ISPs provide is a means to connect to the Internet. Is there any way to connect for free? Or like be your own ISP? How does this work exactly? Etc....

I think the ISPs probably have to pay whoever owns the actual cable that the data goes over.... for maintenance and stuff.

The internet is a collection of colleges (at least last I checked) and businesses that host a gigantic pipeline all around the world. The ISPs pay for maintenance and whatnot.

In other words--no.

It's called Google. For computer-related topics, it can provide far better information than you might suspect.

The internet is only free in the sense that were you to gain access to a backbone, you wouldn't have to feed money into a slot for each bit that passes in and out. It's sort of like a water company, you pay to get hooked up to the main lines.

You used to be able to get free dial-up through Juno, and if you knew certain tricks you could get it without ads. I did that for a good 2 years before we got DSL.

If I remember how it works right:

A long time ago... in a galaxy... uh... right here...

To connect to the internet, one would have to pay a one-time fee to the government. Since this fee was too much for the average user, some clever entrepreneur created the first ISP.
