It's all art.

Or, art is communication for those thoughts, concepts, emotions, &c, that can't be adquately expressed through vanilla text or speech. It's art if it succeeds.

The reason people think The Gates is artistic is because it's aesthetically pleasing in contrast with the ugly modernist/postmodernist look of architecture and other artificial things from recent times. In some other cultures, they would probably be considered really mundane by most people.

However, I don't know how to define 'art'.

Art:

Anything that one would find intriguing, and beautiful, which is capable of being physically, emotionally, and/or intellectually stimulating, and able to hold one's attention for an extended period of time.

Just because art is imitation, it does not mean imitation is art.

I'm just going to say straight up that I can't, and don't pretend to be able to, but I like Ictus' definition. It's sort of in the same vein as my artist's statement, which was basically that I use art to communicate ideas I can't possibly express in words.

A desperate disease requires a dangerous remedy.

A major source of objection to a free economy is precisely that it gives people what they want instead of what a particular group thinks they ought to want. Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself.

Okay, how about this:

Art is anything created by a person that, when perceived, inspires an interesting sense of another time, place, life or reality.
