A nordic skiing set + shoes + wax is pretty cheap, and that's all you really need. If you aren't going to outgrow them they last you a pretty long while too. Alpine sets are far more expensive, so I've always just rented mine when I've managed to go alpine skiing. Got my cross-country set two years ago. I only started cross-country skiing because I needed something to do during the winter and I knew that I'd have to know how to ski during my armed service period in the Finnish Defence Forces.
