Extremely Addictive Flash Game: MotherLoad
2005-03-16, 8:44 AM #1
I've waisted about 4 hours on this game in the past 2 days, so be warned... dont play unless you have lots of free time.

http://www.xgenstudios.com/motherload/motherloadx.swf

Basically, you're in a rover on mars that can drill down, to the left, and to the right, and fly up. Your mission is to collect various minerals and gems in exchange for money to upgrade and fuel your rover. You start out with the really cheep stuff near the sufarce, Ironium and Bronzium, but as you earn more money and upgrade your rover with better engine, drill, and a large gas tank you can go deeper to discover Silverium, Goldinium, Platinium, Einsteinium, etc, which are all progressively more valuable.

You can also save your game so you can continue later. This lets you keep your money and your upgrades, but unfortunately you lose whatever drilling progress you've made so far. Also watch out for earthquakes and gas pockets.

The best tactic I think, is to just drill straight down once you've gotten a couple upgrades. By going straight into the ground, you can more quickly reach the valuable stuff, and by leaving a straight shaft you wont get lost as easily and run out of fuel before making it back to the surface.

Sounds really fun, but I'm confused about why you need to go back to the surface.

Heh... the medium tank has TK-421 on the side.

Fun.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

To fill up your fuel tank, and drop off what you've mined so far. Drilling and moving around consume fuel, and if you let your tank go empty, you lose the game. Also, once your storage box fills up, you have to return to the surface and empty it before you can continue mining. In addition, the places to buy upgrades and repairs are all located on the surface, and upgrades are neccessary if you want to be able to drill deep enough to get the good stuff.

When I asked that question I had only been dinking around with it for a minute. Now I have seen the error of my ways. I'm down to about 1500 feet. :) Man this gigantic tank of gas is nice. And I found a martian skeleton! It gave me 10,000 dollars instantly!

Stupid earthquakes. They've now wrecked two of my 2000 foot shafts.

The "religious artifact" was handy though; gave me $50,000.

I found this game repetative. Not to mention, I don't like progressive games like this. I just want a game that takes skill and ability, rather than progressive patience.

Does anyone else have a glitchy background as well as slow framerate with this game? Cus I do. Also how do you sign up to save your game? I quit the game thinking it would ask me if I wanted to save, but no dice, lost my game...

I'm down to 4000 feet now! I've got a new strategy for drilling really deep - instead of going straight down so your return to the surface is easier, buy a quantum teleporter and just go down until you run out of fuel. Buy a few backup fuel tanks and you can stay down pretty much until your cargo bay fills up.

I've been playing this for months now, it is amazingly fun. My lowest is about -5000. And a cleared out ALL land down to about -1200, then an earthquake hit :(

AAAAAARGH @ gas pocket!!!!

I was down past 5000 feet, and I hit one.... that sucked. But it's probably a good thing, because I've already wasted five hours on the game... it was it's way of telling me "get a life"

Has anyone beat it yet besides overlord? I'm gearing up to beat it.

The trick is, you need about 50 plastique explosives because blasting becomes FAR cheaper than drilling once you get below 5000 feet.

And for you non-believers out there, the amazonite drill is worth every penny. It makes drilling almost as fast as falling; no joke. It digs 120 feet per second. That means nearly a thousand feet per minute.

Okay, I'm goin' back down with 1,000 repair kits and 871 plastiques. :) I am NOT going to be defeated this time! Wish me luck!

Gas pockets are REALLY starting to piss me off.... that, and the fact that it doesn't save the position of the shafts when you save the game.

EDIT: Really? In that case, energy shield here I come.
