PDA! I just got my Dell Axim X50 and this is the first site I thought of!

What PDA's does everyone have (or wish you had)?

Oh yeah, congratulate me too.

I have a Palm m505. And I'm damned proud of it! :p

In fact, it won't even connect to the computer anymore. I don't know whether it's a problem with the docking station or what.

You can google it and find some stuff. It's pretty cool. Hey, I mean you can play Doom and Quake and stuff on there. :D

This is probably the ideal thread to ask:

I'm off to University in a few months, I was considering getting a laptop, but I'm thinking a PDA might be more useful, considering I'll probably steal this computer when I go off.

So, what is the most awesome PDA there is, for notetaking, calculations, the like?
What is a pocket PC and how does that compare? What do I want?

My PSP will be my PDA :p

I really don't have a use for one. They're not exactly effective for internet stuff, since you are stuck with whatever hotspots are around. In addition, scheduling is a pain to do on PCs in general.

About the only thing it would be good for is a contacts list, something my cell phone does very well. :p

A pocket pc is a PDA that runs on the windows pocket OS. Thats what my Axim is and I love it. My last one was on the palm OS. If you want to replace a laptop with a PDA, I suggest a pocket PC. You can work with Word and Excel files from the start, plus you can get them with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth built in, like mine. Every post I've made in this thread has been made from my pocket pc from a wireless hotspot. Right now I'm at school in the student union. Couldn't do that with my old one.

The amount of hotspots around depends on where you are. They're everywhere in Tallahassee and Orlando (where I am) so it's quite handy for me.

That looks good.

A pocket PC sounds like what I want, Excel would be perfect for data logging. What are the specs that matter? What sort of battery should I be looking for? What's awesome about your PDA, and what is less awesome?

The Axim X50v has those same features for hundreds less. Or you can get the X50 without the VGA screen and a slightly slower processor for even less. The screen still looks great and it's plenty fast.

Don't worry, money is no concern. I just want something excellent. :-)

Ah, well then I've heard nothing bad about HP's so go for it :)

And to answer your original question about specs: Battery power and processor speed are pretty much the two most important specs. But you have to trade one for the other. That's why I got the middle-range processor. MOST important for me though was the OS and included software. The pocket PC had exactly what I need.

Can you get replacable batteries, so I could have a spare one in my bag or something?

I've got a Sony Clie nx70v. I've sent it in and gotten an updated digital camera put in it... :D It's now a 2.4 megapixel beast... I've also got software on it that makes it recognize my microdrive... so 2 gigs of space on my PDA... :)

But right now it's just a virtual photo frame to show off pics of my new lady while I'm on the comp. :) It's sitting in the docking station on my desk with the image open.
