The best RTS? The original Command and Conquer. ;)
And when the moment is right, I'm gonna fly a kite.

Red Alert 2 was nice, but I liked C&C as well as Red Alert... even Tiberian Sun, much more.

Anyhow, there's always Starcraft which I haven't played ever (though I bought it), but it's supposedly good. I should dig it up one of these days.

Swords and stuff though... Battle for Middle Earth is great.

So is Warhammer 40k Dawn of War. Cept instead of swords, it has tanks and giant mecha crabs and big demons with axes :x

WH40k: Dawn of War is real fun.
2005-03-25, 7:15 AM #13
it is... but there is a very limited number of units and the singleplayer has a good story but it's pretty short.

I found the multiplayer to be quite satisfying. Go go Chaos! :) What was the name of that one big arse demon? Blood something methinks...

Anywho, it has a big axe and hits things. If he attacks a normal unit, sometimes he gets it stuck to his axe, and swings it around randomly, hitting the walls of enemy buildings, the ground, other units and stuff. Quite fun to watch someone across the LAN floor screaming as his hero is hit with an axe, then thrown around a city.

The only RTS I ever really got into was an old Forgotten Realms one called Blood and Magic. It was on a much smaller scale than anything like Command and Conquer or Star Craft, but it was a lot of fun.

YES!

Undoubtedly Rome: Total War, Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War, Starcraft, Warcraft 3, and Total Annihilation are among the best of the best.

I have to agree. Warhammer 40K is an exceptionally well made game. I like the way you deal with squadrons and not individual units for one. I just started playing the game and I can already tell it's one of my favorites.

C&C Generals with the Zero Hour expansion is great, and then even better with the ProGen mod (made by the same guy that did DeeZire for RA2).

I really liked Rise of Nations..............

Sacrifice is furiously fun in multiplayer. Especially since your commander is on the field himself and constantly involved in the combat. Very nice rock, paper, scissors style of design. Very pretty, despite its age and modest requirements.

Rome: Total War, of course.
If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.

Starcraft, no question. No game held my attention like this one.

StarCraft is the best RTS there ever was, and ever will be.

Starcraft.

Red Alert 2 isn't so fast paced but still amazing.

C&C Generals is too easy.

Total War games aren't my cup of tea.

The only RTS I own and play is StarCraft. I'm not really all that good at RTS game (I lack patients so I bail too soon to finish games) but there is this one RTS game that I loved to play online. It was Ground Control II and its one of my favorite games because it doesn't involve having to maintain and economy and building a base. In that game, all you had to do to keep getting more troops on the field is to gain points by destroying the enemy. You can then use those points to either upgrade your dropship (the main ship that brings all your stuff) or have it bring in more troops and equipment to the battlefield. A simple formula compared to other RTS games but for me it made it a lot more fun to play since you didn't have to wait like 5 minutes to produce troops just to send them out and have them get wiped out and repeat that procedure all over again until you raped the map of all resources.
The cake is a lie... THE CAKE IS A LIE!!!!!

Bloodthirster?

Another good RTS is Homeworld, but I doubt that the online experience can compare to the likes of StarCraft, etc.
