Havok Physics

Why is it so great? In carmageddon 2 the physics seemed just as good and its an old game. Especially the level with the large logs, the way the game simulated those almost seemed like the barrels in the Half Life 2 barrel demos.

The difference is that those are completely scripted animations, and the Havok physics aren't.

I don't think so, there were infinite ways I could manipulate everything. I could orient anything in game and launch it and it would have different spins and such.

Meh, I've never played Carmaggedon 2. :o Only the first one.

The ones in Carmaggedon 2 are true physics. I'll have to agree here. The physics were excellent for 1998, and they can still compete.

My best guess is that the Havok engine is more efficient. The Carmageddon 2 engine would probably require much, much more processor power to handle the amount of things in Half-Life 2, whereas the Havok engine (I'd guess) can handle it at a fraction of the resource cost.

Why do you say that? If the physics could run seamlessly on a pentium 2, what makes you think havok would have been able to? And what evidence do you have to support that havok is more efficient?

It's pure speculation on my part. I can't believe, however, that the Carmageddon engine was handling near the amount of items that Half-Life 2 was handling. In addition, the whole issue of propriety probably caused the Havok engine to be made instead of using Carmageddon 2.

I read that the Carmageddon did use a real-time physics engine, just the graphics sucked, and the game was never that popular.

I think you chaps will find that "physics" is, surprisingly, singular!

And I think you'll find that grammar nazis get flogged.

Where did anyone suggest otherwise?
