So I just found out that we can now get a 1.5 Mb/s wireless connection where I live back home. We're out in the country; so it's been dial-up so far. But now they put in a tower in the nearest town (you wouldn't think it would be profitable, the population is only 540).

So goodbye forever, 56k!

What MB didn't tell you is that his school has two OC3 connections.

I've got 5Mb/s here....

And it actually acts like 6 or 7, because absoulty no one is in our node. I was getting speeds of regular servers of about 900Kb/s, and my theoretical max is about 619.

I have 10 Mbps at school, divided by several thousand students. 60 kb/s is my normal download. But I'm moving out soon, and will have cable, split by 3 (me and my roommates). Should be a little better I think.

I don't think school internet connections should count... I mean, I get close to 10 or 15 Mb/s pretty regularily, here at school... so unless someone has an OC3 connection at home...

Well, lets just say that a 1.5 Mb/s connection is far superior to dialup, especially considering that I live in the middle of nowhere.

I doubt there are even a few thousand computers in the school that use the connection..

I get 10mb/s on average.
2mb/s from massassi.

Put it this way- Anything below 4mb/s is slow for me.

Try a 3mbps line used by 900 students. (And yes, almost all 900 are on ALL THE TIME)

Average school bandwith? about 15-20kb/s, on a good day.

Thank god it's just Highschool, and not college, I'd die from the slow speeds.

My home internet goes at 600kb/s usually, and is plenty fast for me :D

2mbit. Usually get about 250kb/sec.

I looked into getting a broadband connectoin recently after my dialup provider of nearly eight years finally cut my access (It's a rather long story.)

DSL isn't an option as BellSouth was too lazy to run a line out near us. Roadrunner wants 45 bucks a month for service. FOURTY FIVE. I can see paying a bit more than dial-up because it's faster and always on, but fourty five bucks a month is excessive.

So I instead opted for another dial-up plan from BellSouth which costs me roughly a FIFTH of what Roadrunner would per month. Until their prices drop by at least half, I'm not interested in their service.

Hey if anyone knows of a way I could secretly set up a wireless router that would broadcast a signal maybe... 600 ft? I'll just say less than 1000 ft. I mean iunno... it'd have to be in the basement.. and there is a door around there that leads outside - and a window or two but i'm pretty sure most of the walls are made of cement. The window is on the opposite side of the room from the router - and.. well iunno... lol just tell me if it is possible and provide a link or two to a router and or wireless adapter (if possible - preferably not internal.)

45 bucks for roadrunner is worth it. They're really good. N they've gotten better, recently.

I moved n got stuck with Charter .. which is fine, they're decently fast, except I download many humongous (40MB+) non pornographic video files every day, so at times it's a bit taxing .. but considering how large the files are and the number coming in simultaneously, it does a pretty darn good job (~120 KB/sec on average)

My upload is deathly slow though

Owen, no, but if you use proper encryption it shouldn't matter whether anyone can see the router or not.

The only way the signal would stop at 600ft would be if (one of the following):
- The router was specifically made with components that have a 600ft maximum range.
- You tweak around with resistors and the inside to lower the power to the transmitter in the router... which isn't worth doing. :p
- You line your walls with steel.

lol wait i'm trying to set up a router at my friend's house so i can use his dsl... lol.. that's what i was asking about.
