This is a prime example of patent law gone overboard.

I am more interested to know when they lodged the complaint. This technology has been in use for probably about 10 years. In Mikus' court of law, if it takes you more than a year to file a suit, your case is automatically dismissed on the grounds that it obviously wasn't that important to you anyways.

what about all these other controllers that use it too? like gamecube and xbox?

They'll probably win the appeal. You can't have a patent on something that is a logical advance in a technological field, and Sony's lawyers can probably prove that.

Sony is just laughing at this more than anyhting else.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Microsoft are suckers, though I do realize that most of that probably went to buy a share in the company.

Why haven't they sued Nintendo, Logitech, et al?

I move that we replace our current courts of law with Mikus' courts of law.

And while we're at it, let's remove the ability to sue for "pain and suffering", the most bull**** reason to get money ever.

I think this is bull**** in general, but if anything, they should get some sort of a reward. The halting of a product's sales, however, is silly and idiotic. That's like saying a car can no longer be sold because they had leather from some other leather company. Congradulations, your leather was in a very trendy and high profit vehicle: Free advertising.

And all of the above point is moot, as Mikus said, they're only trying to make a buck. The force feedback has been used for over 10 years. Where were you the day the PS1 with force feedback was released? Picking your nose? No, you were more than likelly receiving checks in the mail for this contribution of technology to the market.

I'm gonna sue someone for making me read this lame news. People and companies get sued everyday. But, no one makes a big fuss out of it unless it's a well-known company. Besides, I'm sure the amount of money that Sony is being sued is probably like pocket change to them.
Who made you God to say "I'll take your life from you"?

$90.7 million? Sony probably asked if they wanted cash or check.
I can't think of anything to put here right now.

Logitech and Microsoft are among the licensees of the technology. All Force Feedback support in Windows is derived from that work.

Nintendo's force feedback system is based on a different technology and, as such, isn't subject to the patent.

This is a joke. Immersion have waited all these years. Now they're sueing. Why? So they get more money.

i remember this force feedback tech coming out and it was big news.

this is exactly what america is all about. not the sueing. the legal rights and ownership of technology. the freedom to make money.
one company spends time and money in a new technology. they are therefor allowed to protect and/or lisence the technology under the rules and laws of patent.
come to america and get rich. it's the american way.

why are you who are saying it's stupid saying so?

What's with the excessive schadenfreude? I mean, sure, Sony has pulled a lot of crap over the years, but recently I think they've improved a lot as a video game company, with quality games like God of War and great hardware like the PSP.
2005-03-29, 6:31 PM #32
Damn, this sucks. Good thing this doesn't affect their PSPs...good god these things...worth every penny.

The reason they aren't suing nintendo is that they developed their own rumble technology. The reason they aren't suing microsoft is that microsoft paid them licencing fees to use their specific design. Also, it isn't that they waited to sue sony here, it's been in the legal system for several years, this is just the verdict. Sony tried to bankrupt them over the past few years by throwing red tape at them in court. That's why I'm happy about this, it's sony trying to be a bully and losing badly.
I'm just here for the free food

Hope that Immersion gets the proper licensing fees and royalties that it should have, but I think barring the sale of PS2 and related equipment is just over-the-top.
