Hey guys,

This thread exists because I wanted to know if anyone has see, or heard of, the TV show "Firefly" that aired in 2002 on Fox.

I just bought it on DVD, and I must say, this is the best TV show I've seen in a long LONG time. It deserved a better chance.
This show was as good as STar Trek TNG in it's prime I think.

It's entertaining, funny, it has character development, incredible TV graphics/effects, good stories, and all that stuff.

This isn't Enterprise, or Stargate, this is something a bit more than that (or less depending on your perspective). This is genuinely good entertaining Sci-Fi.

It was created by Joss Weadon, the creator of Angel and a bunch of other stuff. Honestly, I dont know much about Joss, and I though Angel to be another crappy Buffy Remake, but alot of people said it was really good.
I'm not sure how much of Angel is in Firefly, but this show, however more sci-fi action and less Vampire action, was amazing.

It didn't make it into mainstream popularity for multiple reasons, namely Fox didn't air the episodes in sequence, or at the same time for that matter. There were only 11 original episodes aired over 2 months. It wasn't a series that you could skip one episode and miss a plot element and be totally in the loop for. If you missed an episode, itw as like missing 24, you missed the episode. Not like Star Trek where every week was a new adventure. Well it was... but every new adventure with the same characters as the previous week. Kinda hard to explain.

At any rate. This show has the best wry an subtle humor I've ever seen.
Example, after a duel over a woman on teh ship, teh captain is standing over his dueler, all bloodied up:
*some guy* You must kill him to end the duel
*captain* (silence) (staring) (panting) You know, it takes a great man to be merciful.
*general silence*
*captain* I guess that makes me a GOOD man. *starts pokin the guy with his sword then walks off like nothing happened*

or this:
Gunfire on the ship, then the ships "tough guy" is sleeping, you see him quickly pull off the sheet covering his weapons and knive stash next to his bed, dramatic music plays and hte camera zooms in on the guns, then he pulls the sheet over him and falls back to sleep.
*gun battle continues with everyone else*

Alot of "you had to be there" moments, but the humor blends very well with the stories amazingly. And the stories are, of course, top notch. The humor isn't hte show...well it is. But there are funny episodes with action, and there are action episodes with humor. A perfect variety for a TV show, not every episode is the same thing.

Whenever teh ship is flying, they don't play the super sci-fi action theme song with warp speed engine sounds, they only play Western GUITAR Music... which is very cool.

At any rate, they're making a movie called "serenity" (the name of the ship) that will be coming out this September. I'd advise and urge you all to see it, because it wil definately be a good movie. If the movie does well, they'll even do a trilogy.

Problem was, they left alot of plot holes unfinished since it was only one season of 14 episodes (including unaired episodes), so they're trying to finish those up with the movies.

TO close this post/thread... BUY THE DVD, or borrow it, or something. It will be the best 40 bucks you've spent.

I watched this show, and I really liked it. Can't wait for the movie.

Watched and recorded the episodes that I saw when it was on TV here. I think I missed a couple, but that's alright.

Splendid series. Surprising too, since I wasn't exactly a fan of Buffy/Angel. I especially like small details like:
a) That there's no sound in space.
b) That there aren't any silly aliens... Speaking English... Walking upright in a bipedal manner.

Can't wait to see what Whedon pulls off with a bigger budget.
If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.

Oh yes, the show rocked so much. Unlike those who didn't like it.

Waiting for Serenity...

Firefly was the best show to air on Fox in recent years. It's a shame that they killed it. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the DVDs.

I will be at Serenity on opening day. I can't wait.

[Edit] - this is what makes me really want to see the movie:

Quote:
Oh, there's things I'll miss. But there's definitely things I WON'T miss.
In no particular order:

1) Fillion. People who are prettier than me are not supposed to be funnier than me. I think it's a guild thing. And that whole 'gracious and professional' thing got old on day ONE, you know what I mean?

2) Cinematographer Jack Green. This guy lights stuff ALL THE TIME. Seriously, like eighty-three percent of the shots had light in them. He totally didn't get my "Just Like Radio" concept for the film.

3) The incessant meddling of the studio: where was it? We waited and waited, what, are they all too busy and important to take the time to ruin my little film? This is Hollywood, people. Learn our ways and customs while you're here. Sheesh.

Just a taste of the Hell I've been through. And being surrounded by beautiful women, and, let's face it, beautiful men, all of whom get along, work hard and play their characters with such ease and nuance it's clear they were born for the roles -- who needs that?

Firefly is the second best thing you can buy on DVD to Band of Brothers. If you enjoy sci-fi in even the smallest way, go out and buy it. Now.

I dont really like Buffy or Angel, but Firefly is so damn good.

Few of my favourite quotes:

Who's flying this thing?! Oh, right, that'd be me...
