Not in the least is no palladium.
But I wish they would standadise the bloody thing!

I don't know how many packages I've had to install today, to get SuperKaramba going. It's not even going correctly at the moment.
Im supposed to look for the Python-devel package, whatever that is. Not much seems to be known about it.

Really annoys me at times [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

What I do like is: Three permissions.
In windows? About 6 or 7, not including Share permissions.

palladium? who cares =P

if you ever "standardise" linux you ruin it. the whole point is that we have freedom to choose which build of some obscure program we want.
i can choose if i want to build Python myself, get an official binary, or get someone else's modified binary or source.
"standardising" removes a lot of that freedom and ruins linux.

Ok fair enough... but I wish I didnt have to install 15 things, reconfigure 10, reinstall 4 of the aforementioned 15, then edit 3 *.conf files to get something going.

And I thought most linux users craved the tweaking that the OS requires.

not me, I just want to get work done in a stable environment. Tweaking is nice, it just shouldn't be necessary most of the time.

I rarely have to do any tweaking on this box, and as long as I can find SuSE9 RPMs for a package, itll usually work.

Your problem isnt Linux itself, its your distro. Dont curse all of Linux because of one distro. If you listened to all the fools here and installed something like Slackware when youve never used Linux before, you gonna grow an unhealthy hatred for it. Do yourself a favor and download an RPM or DEB based distro.

What's wrong with standards? It brings a little order to chaos.

Or you could get Debian and stop worrying about dependencies [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

To solve all you problems, get Gentoo or Debian. They resolve dependacies for you and download all the neccessary packages.

Do I hate Debian? Hm, I'm not quite sure. Maybe I'd have a better idea if I was able to install it. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

I will admit to disliking knoppix. The user interface and layout of things is horribly cluttered and bloated.

Also, the general consensus is that apt-get is the more mature and stable tool than portage.

Well atm Im using a HD install of Knoppix because my favourite distro (Debian woody) didnt work to well on my modern hardware (X server stuffed itself).
So I kinda am using Debian.

Im tossing up on getting slackware. But I still love Debian I gotta admit.

Might give that another go and now that I know how to tell apt-get to get me an unstable release.... hmm...

I've tried Debian, Gentoo, Red-Hat and Knoppix, and Knoppix was so perfect for me. I love it.

It does, yes, but then theres that option called INSTALL that generally finishes things up fairly quickly, if your ready for it or not....

I love knoppix. I especially like that I can take it with me to uni on cd and I can use it there with no one being the wiser, as knoppix leaves no trace of itself on the HD unless you tell it to.

(you may ask why I do this until I inform you that the few PCs that there are at my uni stil lhave win98 on them and are so laden with spyware that they can barely function. Who could blame me for bringing my own OS under those conditions?

Damn straight. I'm here to break the stereotypes, to prove that you can have the best of both worlds.

Why should someone be dubbed a social outcast simply because they want a stable, reliable computer?
