Never, EVER let your parents touch your internet settings
2005-03-29, 4:57 PM #1
Good god. I just got done spending 4 hours jumping through hoops lit on fire trying to get my computer back on the net. Ends up my dad did all of this in one shot--changed the physical IP address of our router, changed the router's mac address, disabled his wireless internet, and changed the subnet mask.

How the man did this is beyond me.

ANYWAYS, post your internet troubles, and if you can, tell me how to reset your mac address on your computer.

This isn't in the technology forum for 2 reasons: 1) I really need it to be seen 2) It's the sharing of a story.

My parents are partially competent with computers... which is okay except my dad seems to be REALLY GOOD at finding hidden porn folders.

I would not let that man touch my computer.

I'm so glad I don't live at home as something like that would not be beyond my dad. Too often he'd **** something up then tell me to fix it, not having a clue what he did to screw everything up.

My dad is actually rally good with computers. Expecially hardware-wise.

My mom once erased the entire email at her school. Every e-mail address used by teachers, information, address books, saved e-mail, everything got wiped out and the network had to be reset and each teacher individually put back in.

She never admitted it was her.
I can't think of anything to put here right now.

Even better. Use Linux. Best. Anti-parent computer thing. EVAR.

I left my dads computer with a Knoppix disk in it, and he didn't have a clue what to do. :p

Hell, I tried installing linux, and I didn't have a clue what to do - and I consider myself to be relatively computer-literate... I bet my dad would figure it out though; he was using computers back in the UNIX days, and earlier. He recounts all these stories about punch cards and programs that take hours to compile and run... and time-shared mainframes accessed from little terminals...

I'm never ceased to be amazed on how some people can complete screw up computer settings.

They'll change the most illogical thing and it's like "How in the hell did you change that?!"

My dad is really good with computers, which isnt surprising considering he's a network administrator. My mom is somewhat competant, at least enough to know that she shouldnt try to mess with network settings herself.

Both my parents are total nincompoops when it comes to operating a computer, so I never had that problem. All my dad can do is open MSWord, and all my mom can do is play solitaire. :p

My sister, in an act of ingenius rebellion and individuality created a 'Catwoman' account on the family computer's Outlook Express, and set it to the default account. Wasn't hard to fix, but it was embarrassing for her and hilarious to me.

The best kind of nincompoop parent is the kind that realizes it, admits it, and leaves you on your way. My dad thinks he's leet because he can change memory.

POS300:
sister deleting a bunch of dlls in the aol folders... (and she was the one with the most computer experience at the time)

POC600
sound card drivers from compaq FOR THE EXACT MODEL of the PC causing the modem to fail (don't even ask... the drivers even screwed the onboard sound) couldn't get it working... had to buy a new modem

CRAPLOAD of spyware from when my sister owned the thing making pages load really slow

Darkside3000 (current PC)
with the exception of someone forgetting to pay the cable bill a while back... no major problems

sister moved to florida
dad never uses the computer
mom has laptop
the Darkside 3000 is safe from my family screwing it up
eat right, exercise, die anyway

/me reaches behind router, hits reset button for 3 seconds (or unplugs router for 1 minute), reboots computer, and gets on the internet.

Yay for instruction manuals.

And you don't reset the MAC address of your ethernet card. It's supposed to be hard coded. You can spoof it though, but you don't need to.

We currently expirience a major hard drive failiour in one of our internet-servers. The thing is supposed to have a RAID1 but it's some ****ing 3ware pseudo-hardware-RAID controller that doesn't want to mirror the primary hard disk if it is a little bit faulty, too. So now I had to hook up a USB-HD, mirror the drive manually with dd and am now waiting for fsck and hoping that everything will work in the end, when I'm finally able to put in two new working drives.
It's just barely running at the moment but the mailserver ****s up after a while and the only thing that helps is a reboot.

My dad lways blamed me for the problems. So he got me net in my room.

He might be pretty good with computers, but his FPS controls leave much to be desired - going through Doom 3 he found he could look up as well as down! Amazing.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

My dad's fairly skilled with computers, though somehow he manages to make XP crash almost every week, something that's beyond me. My mom knows nothing about computers, but she, thankfully, knows better than to tinker with the computer settings without me, my dad, or my uncle present.

nope.

My dad is fairly decent with computers (he worked on all the big mainframes back in the day, with punch cards and everything) but my mon is completely computer illiterate. She can't even use winXP, which is designed to be easy to use and has been dumbed down to ridiculous levels.

I usually just log off because my family uses logins. So my password seems to save my comps' settings fairly well. It's basically the equivalent of locking it. ;)

My dad is probably better than me at everything that has to do with computers. I got him started on Linux too. The only aspect I have him licked in is games, and the functioning of said games. Hell, my Dad used to play TFC with me, he used Suprnova when it worked, and codes Java in his spare time :P

CM--it'd be amazing if my dad didn't THROW THE MANUAL AWAY RIGHT AFTER I GOT THE ROUTER.

He seems to thwart me at every pass.
