I'm on a jury!
2005-03-30, 5:24 PM #1
I received a summons back in January, but I was able to put it off until this week.

After sitting in the courthouse all day in the Jury prep room, my group was eventually led into a courtroom and jurors were initially assigned. After all of us were questioned, some of the initial jurors were eliminated, and I was chosen to replace one of them.

so much for the rest of my spring break... :( This will be a 4-day trial, so I'll be missing a few classes, too.

Has anyone here actually served on a jury?

I've been summoned but not selected. In fact, I postponed a summons until May. And don't worry, my spring break is all down the tubes as well. Stupid professors.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

My words from my mouth, Wolfy.

Let's just hope it's not a stalker, rape, or devorce trial.

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Did you tell them you like to steal games and music because it's not a crime?

I dare you to try to pick up the Judge if she's female. That should get you out of duty! ;)

I actually was on a jury just last month. In fact, I made a thread about it . After the four day ordeal looking back on it it was pretty rewarding. That is, it was cool to see how the process works. But it is pretty boring.

Hmmm... interesting how the first thing we both did after landing on a Jury is post about it on Massassi.... interesting.

That sounds like the plot from a romantic comedy.

Better yet... try and pick up on the judge if he's male. That would be even more foolproof.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

Go into the courtroom, and shout a racist slur.

You'll be off faster than you can think.

Just b/c I have connections and know something about the warez scene is not proof in and of itself. I never once said that I actually took part in these things, I only implied that I know how to do so. Knowing <> Doing.

I don't really remember what your basis for saying piracy is ok was, so I'm going to make up my own.

Someone who thinks that stealing is ok because the company is charging too much, or because it's only "intellectual property" should not be on a jury, regardless of whether or not they engage in theft themselves.

Well, I'm already on the jury, so I don't see what difference it makes.

Although I cannot reveal the details of this case until it is resolved, I can say that my stance on piracy is utterly irrelevant in relation to what I must deliberate with the other jurors.

Well in many cases, the person getting the pirated software would not have bought it even if a free version was not available. I mean, how many of us could afford Photoshop or 3dsm? So they are not losing any money, since the downloader wouldnt have bought it anyways, and since it's not really stealing anything from them (as in they don't physically lose anything) it could be considered as OK...But no I'm not really saying it's alright...It isnt fair to all the people who did have to pay for it.

I never have been called in for jury duty. My dad's 58 and he still hasn't been called in. Of course this is probably a good thing...

I think so, too. I don't want any Mexicans serving on any jury, ever!
