Gmail accounts.

I'm making a small list of accounts I want. All the obvious ones I wanted were taken in hotmail and any other mail service. So I am going to be poised at my keyboard to sign up at least 3 accounts the day Gmail goes live.

How about you?

Accounts are already selling on ebay for 200 dollars or more. Also, apparently there is a six-letter minimum for account names.

They figured out they could provide that for $32 per account [I think]. They can easily make that back from the advertising revenues that services like Hotmail and Yahoo can't generate.

[Edit: How about "GBKGBK", GBK?]

It will be free. The accounts that are being sold now are the test accounts that were supposed to be given to google employees and their families/friends.

What exactly do you guys plan to do with 1 gig of email space anyway?...

I don't think Hotmail nor Yahoo can really pack many more ads in without it getting silly, so I don't know how google will fund itself. Mind you, I don't fully get how google keeps itself going as a search engine anyway, so meh.

YES!

As for Google funding itself, they make a lot of money. So much in fact, that all of their employees get free lunches every day. There was an article in our paper about it. It's much craziness how much some people are willing to pay to advertise with google. That, and schools and some companies buy liscenses to use the google engine to search their campus networks. I know our Uni does it.

It seems to me that a lot of people fail to realize how the ads work. For one, the ads don't go into the mail, so they only affect people using G-mail. As far as I know, they follow the same rules as Google's sponsored search ads(the small text ads off to the side when you search), so stuff like porn and such won't show up on them.
