Poison Oak
2005-04-06, 1:19 PM #1
I went hiking last Sunday at Pinnacles national monument, and because we got so much rain this year there was a lot of poison oak. I never touched it, but i have patches al over my body that itch like hell. My right eye is also swollen shut. So, post any experiences or home remedies.
Big pain, and it won’t go away for at least two weeks. :(
I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

They don't have poison oak my way, but there is stinging nettle. I've gotten into a patch of it once, but apparently about 8% of the population is immune to its effects, and I must be one of them.. :P

Hope you feel better soon..

I'm allergic to poison oak, but not poison ivy.

Poison oak, you can use certain compounds of household items like oatmeal on it. Otherwise, get some neosporin.

the west-coast equivalent to poison ivy.

You get poison ivy in the east, you get poison oak out here. Other than that, both are very similar: Touch it and you're in for some hurt.

Utah? Don't you mean Nevada and Idaho? Those two states don't seem to have any. :P

Yeah, I'm just saying that because John Stockton used to play for the Jazz.

Well, Nevada's an important one to remember, because it's your only place in the U.S. where hookers are legal. :p It's the one that looks like a giant triangleish thing that doesn't have any poison oak/ivy in it.

Yeah, cause they've got no plants! :p

Care to explain why Idaho has the largest forest in the contiguous US then?

Sometimes you don't even have to touch poison oak to get it. If it's been recently disturbed, it releases the oils into the air and you can get it that way. Worst of that is that you can breath it in and get it in your throat or lungs.

I work in the summers at a camp where Poison Ivy is more than plentiful, yet I've never gotten it. I think I might be immune to it, but I'm not about to test this theory.

Ok this is random, but my cousin used poison ivy as toilet paper last year.....thought I'd share that just to brighten everyones day...:p

Reminds me of a story...

A couple years ago, one of my friends, Jon, had gone on a camping trip and there was a new guy camper with them. They were out in the forest and the new guy needed to take a dump, so Jon told him to go over behind that tree. A few minutes later, the new guy asks what to use for toilet paper. Jon tells him to use the leaves. A minute later, the new guy comes back and says "the brown leaves were crunchy...."

There should be 1 red dot on that map in Southern California; poison ivy was imported to a small ranch to be shown off for some camping event, and it took root and is surviving (though not spreading, it's only in a maybe 1x1 mile area).

Also, I know there's something called poison sumac, anyone ever encounter it/know where it grows?

I had it when I was small. It (my skin) was so disgusting that I can't really describe it.

Despite being in forests many times, I have yet to get poison Ivy (or poison Oak, but you don't get that where I live). So I guess I'm immune. I don't really want to test that theory though; I try to avoid it whenever possible.

I've never encountered poison ivy or oak, despite spending summers in Kentucky while growing up. Lucky considering how utterly infested that map makes it uot to be...

so is there much difference between poison oak/ivy and nettles?

we get ****loads of nettles around here but i've never come across these oaks and ivys.
2005-04-07, 11:29 AM #37
I think nettles are very mild compered to the oak and ivy. I have had all. My doc gave some steroids, it should clear up a little faster:D

Yes, nettle mostly grows in the pacific northwest and is a lot milder than poison oak/ivy. It causes irritation on your skin for 1-24 hours depending on your sensitivity. It is an acid that causes this, so if you brush up against some, baking soda is good to help settle it down.

yeah, that's the gross part... last october or so I had it all over my arms from yardwork... it was worth the $40 I got, but my arms were ugly with rash and ooze+scabs for about 2 weeks after before it had all gone away. Very itchy and irritated by touch. I think I just got it really bad though, b/c it's never lasted so long on me before.

hope you heal up soon.

We went camping once, and had to use a machete on a field of nettle taller than my waist to clear out a flat spot for the tent. God that hurt
