ROOFTOP DRIVER Apr 7 2005

Thief's mad stunt during police chase

By Mark Mcgivern

A MAN rides on the roof of his car as it careers along a road with no one at the wheel during a police chase.

Dressed in a purple satin dressing gown, he climbed out of his window and taunted officers pursuing him in five cars and a helicopter.

The driver is believed to have slowed down and put the car on cruise control so he could perform the stunt.

He waved a note to a news crew who were following the chase in a helicopter in El Monte, California.

The car raced at up to 120mph during the 75-minute pursuit through several cities in the south of California.

The man, who reportedly has a history of drug problems, is believed to have smashed up his parents' home on Tuesday before stealing their car and racing it through Orange County.

The chase ended when the joyrider stopped the car at a Donut World restaurant in San Juan Capistrano.

After taunting police while he sat at a table in the restaurant, he was jumped on and arrested by officers from the California Highway Patrol.

I love this guy, I mean who sits on top of their car and taunts police during a 75 min chase?

The police tried to shoot him down, but they were attacked by the civil guard. Federal government is pending an unofficial law against such acts.
the idiot is the person who follows the idiot and your not following me your insulting me your following the path of a idiot so that makes you the idiot - LC Tusken

That was wonderful. If ever I got chased by the pigs, I'd have to pull a crazy stunt like that before getting tossed in the slammer.

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

The title of this thread is misleading. I thought someone drove a car off their roof. :(

Well, he probably thought that's where the cops would have gone anyway, so why cause any extra trouble...

Apparently it's true, he drove through the neighborhood of someone on another message board I post at.

He also apparently had a wizzard hat.

Whether the source is credible or not, this guy sped passed my father while he was on the freeway. I get a call that goes like:
- "Turn on the news, is there a police chase on?"
- "No, why?"
- "Some guy just sped passed me holding a purple flag out their window and was being followed by a dozen chippies."
- "Oh weird. Are you ok?"
- "Yeah, just wanted to see if you knew what was happening. Talk to you later."

Then later that night I turn on the TV and FOX news is giving a recap of the chase.

Yeah I saw it on tv as it was happening (the chase, not the "on top of the car part"). What I saw on TV was a copter following the car, about a quarter mile back about a half dozen cop cars, and the making hand gestures and waving some purple cloth out of his window. I didn't leave it on to see the end because it was really boring.

About 10 minutes prior to that, they had another high speed chase with a guy in a stolen silver lexus.

That was one thing I liked about living in CA - tons of car chases. I remember they got some guy with a spike strip on the same road I used to commute back and forth to the base on.
