And they're installing Broadband Lines!!! I'm so excited and happy. Now I can dump away my 56k line, in what? Like a month or so! Post the best things you could ever want to do with a 2mbps connection... I need more ideas about how to celebrate when it arrives.

Post your experiances, thoughts, and ideas... :D

There's the requisite suggestion of porn.

I mean, there's nothing out there that you "really" need to go out and download now that you've got broadband. Basically, it means (generally) less lag than on dialup.

I'd go broadband, but it's too frelling expensive in my area. 45 bucks a month for Roadrunner ONTOP of a 40ish dollar a month Cable TV bill is NOT worth it.

I'll look into it again when it becomes about HALF that price.

Phenoix, you should be able to get a package deal on the two of them, slighty reduced.
Just FYI.

And you should definately hook yourself up with bittorrent and have some fun.

don't get roadrunner. they have the WORST service. they'd cut me off the net in the middle of some good aim chats about twice a day.

40+40 is cheap.

my only option is an packadge deal i believe out here for broadband, and that's satillite.

its totaling up to $110 an month to pay for the internet and the tv.

Roadrunner is essentially my only option. BellSouth was too lazy to install DSL lines near us last time I checked, I've heard bad things about Earthlink's service (which is still not much less than Roadrunner), and AOL is... well... AOL. I don't NEED a reason for not wanting to use them.

Package deal? The one that required upgrading your cable service to digital or some such nonsense? I heard about it, did a little research (very little really) and decided it wasn't worth it. See, I COULD get Cable Broadband with say, Digital Cable and/or the Digital Phone service, but gee... don't they need to, I don't know, INSTALL stuff for that to work? That kinda jacks up the initial cost a bit. Not to mention you're now paying for THREE new services instead of one.

Now, in the end, I could be saving anywhere from 60 to 180 bucks a year doing that (who knows if that's really a deal in the end anyway...), but honestly, I'm getting dialup service NOW for about 8 bucks a month. I happen to like that.

Somone notify me when broadband drops to 15 or 20 bucks a month. Then I'll be interested. 45 bucks a month is freaking outrageous considering what you're getting.

3mb/s for $30/month :o

I think that's just as pricey as AOL's DIALUP plan, is it not?

2005-04-08, 9:23 AM #9
I find it funny when people complain about spending 40 or 50 dollars a month on broadband... until recently, that's what we spent for dialup. Not much choice for ISPs out where I live. Of course, now that they've set up that wireless tower, we get 1.5 mb/s (which is amazing considering how far we are from any sort of civilization).

I get my broadband through verizon. Never had any problems with it.
2005-04-08, 10:22 AM #12
You must not have had any problems with your lines.

A few telephone poles here were destroyed during a Hurricane, so instead of rewiring them... Verizon re-routes the wires.

This puts us out of signal range for DSL...

Yeah, after about a MONTH of not fixing it.. I canceled the service, then I sued them for that months bill and won.

The real savings can be reaped if you also get VoIP phone. Before my broadband service was available, I used to pay $45 for cable tv, $19 for a dialup ISP, and about $75 for local & long distance phone (needed two lines of course!). That all added up to $139. I now pay $70 for cable tv and 4mbps internet, and only $17 for my broadband phone. Saves me about $52 a month, plus I enjoy all of the obvious benefits of the big pipe. Yeehaa!!

It's odd how many Americans have trouble getting broadband, and how expensive it is. I had expected the US to have much better connectivity than us, and I pay £19 a month for a 2MBps connection. And we're so far behind Europe in connectivity it's ridiculous.

Then how about I sign up for it and you pay for it?

Layoff. 40+40 IS cheap for broadband and digital cable. Whether or not you think it is, that's a decent deal.

Right now we have digital cable and 3 Mbps internet for $97 a month, but that includes all premium channels, which I don't watch. It is split 3 ways (me and 2 roommates), but it's still quite expensive. I definately want to drop the premium channels (HBO, Starz et al). It'd save us a fair bit of money.

We get digital cable for 50 bucks a month, and 3 to 4 Meg broadband for 20 more. A fantastic deal, you ask me. It had been 10 dollars the first 3 months, went up to +50 for a while ,then they recently offered it for 20, and that price is locked in the contract. Which rocks.

70 bucks a month for shows we all watch, free installation, and always on FAST internet connection? Who could ask for more. I'm trying to convince my family to switch to broadband phones to save another 40 bucks, but my parents are hesitant. Our current phone service is REALLY good to us, and we know the lady who works at the office by name, not because we've had a lot of problems, but because she was nice enough to do follow ups when we did have problems, and spoke to us like human beings, not crazy apes who their leeching cash out of. Just shows you how far service gets you: We're sticking with them over a 40 dollar difference.

I think I need to catch up on sleep; I read that as "There's a woman outside my house." Thought the replies were a little strange for that.. :)

Wish I could be getting broadband! Still stuck in the dark ages, unable to get ADSL etc, 'phone line too noisy' is all I get. Sucks, because my neighbour can...

cheap, i use cheap as relative word, if i am looking at two item

one at $10,000 and second at $1,000 i will say the second model is cheap, so shuush.

even if tho i can't afford, i tend to say x model is cheap, because IT IS cheaper than its competitior.

I go from having broadband for 4 years to having a ****ty 56k line thats no good for games. I remember playing a lot of old mp games on 56k, now I get 500 ping in those very same games... This is with major tweaking too. I used to play so many online games now I can't play any...
