But he's estimated to be one of the eight-most prolific spammers in the world.

You don't understand American jailtime systems. Nine years translates to 2-5 depending on behavior, circumstances, etc. After that it's parole. That's a fair sentence for a con artist, ESPECIALLY one who could make up to 1.5 million every couple months off of unsuspecting people.

I understand the system, it's no different from Britain.

How can you call 2-5 years a good sentence for a murderer? That's what cons should get, especially cons who have incurred THAT much damage.

HA! I wish. I get about 300 a day. Actually that's been cut back to about 190 a day the past couple weeks.

I don't understand how people can get this much spam.
I've gotten probably about 20 spam emails in my whole life.

I get a few hundred a day. It comes from having email addresses on websites.

It's the setting an example bit I have a problem with. People shouldn't be punished to set an example.

Whenever you sign up for something (forums usually) or download a program that requires your email address, it usually gets sent out to anyone and their mother. I think my bank got me worse than anybody to be honest. After I signed up for their online banking is when I started getting large amounts of spam. Could be a coincidence, but who knows?

If he hadn't been sending out 10 million e-mails per day, I might agree with you.

Then people would just keep on doing bad things. Not to mention, they just now started cracking down...this is also to start what is hopefully a long line of punishments (fines and jail times) as well as to set an example.

Yes, it's a good way to prevent crime. But basically it seems this guy is getting a harsher punishment simply because he was the first one to be sentenced under the new law.

As much as he deserves to be punished, it's a little unfair on him if he's given a harsher punishment just to make an example of him.
