I never understood the obsession with having the largest speakers, or the most powerful stereo system in a car. There are a bunch of dumb things about it:

A. It's begging to be stolen
B. They cost a fortune
C. There's no reason to have a superloud stereo
D. Loud stereos = fines in lots of places.
E. You are NOT COOL if your car is vibrating
F. Your oversized subwoofers does not make the rap sound any better.
G. I hope you don't go deaf.
H. This applies to the fact that some don't blare their overpriced stereos. Congrats, you paid for something that you aren't even using to its potential.

Sorry, that's just my big rant.

I think what's funnier is the people who spend thousands of dollars trying to make their cheap Honda Civic into something that it's not.

Saw a guy a while back on the road with one that he'd obviously spent loads of cash on.

I bet he was upset when he saw a 2002 Ford Taurus blow past him. =P

A) Yup, definitely begging to be stolen, but other things in my car are as well, so what's one more thing?

B) Yes, they do cost a fortune, but if used right they can last quite some time.

C) I agree, that there is no major reason, but it does allow me to take some of the extra stress off of my regular 3-Way speakers. Plus, I like the additional bass, it does make some stuff sound a little better.

D) If used in a more responsible manner you don't really have to worry about cops/fines. If the subwoofers are kept at a decent volume you can hear (and feel) it in the car considerably well, while not disturbing anyone around you.

E) Again, if you keep the levels right, the trunk (and other parts of the car) won't rattle too much. And if it does, there are options, such as DynaMat, or, in some cases, just simply tightening some bolts or screws.

F) Nothing can make rap sound better, without some kind of drastic change in the songs themselves.

G) If I go deaf, that's my problem. But, again, keeping the levels at a decent volume, you should be fine.

If used responsibly, and set up right, you'll be fine. My system can hardly be heard outside of my car, less I have my sub-woofer level turned up considerably high, which is just excessive, annoying, bothersome, and, as you mentioned, illegal in numerous places.

All-in-all, the whole point of this post was to say I agree with what you said, but at the same time disagree. It's all about how it's used. You shouldn't have it up real loud at night when people are probably sleeping, nor should you have it up so loud that it bothers the people around you. Just enough to accent the sound that's already there from your original 4-8 speakers.

Nerds with fancy computers don't affect other people. Jerks with booming subwoofers driving down the street or in parking lots and forcing everyone to hear and suffer through their music DOES affect others. And car stereos definately costs way more than any PC mod would. $150 will get you a nice window case, 2 CCFL lighting kits, and enough LED fans to light and cool the entire case.

If your lucky, you might find a speaker set for $200? And you still need that superpowerful amplifier to throw in your trunk or whatever, which takes up room, and unlike PCs, cars get ripped off a lot more often.

I don't mind stereos, but it's hilarious the people who spend hundreds of dollars to THOUSANDS of dollars to upgrade a honda...to what you can get stock with a Mustang or another performance car. Also, the mufflers make me think of angry beehives that have their buzzes raised in pitch.

So what happens when you crash the thing and break your precious speaker system?

The one thing that pisses me off is bad speakers. I can't stand it when they distort at low volumes and have no low range.

Bad speakers bother me to no end as well.

Drive carefully, and you may not have to worry about crashing the car and losing the system. Plus it all depends where was hit. If the trunk was saved, your in good shape.

My friend actually got his system included in his car insurance. State Farm told him to take his car down, and they'd take pictures of it, as proof it exists, and was then covered. So that may be an option.

cool looking computer is only really understandable if it doesn't sit in the same spot all the time... like if you take it to LAN parties or if you are one of those people who go to quakecon and stuff... and only to keep from being made fun of because you didn't spend money on useless stuff to make it look cool...

other than that a plain case is just fine

and if you want it to look cool... paint something on it... a cool handpainted design will be much more "leet" than a window and some pretty lights

I've done the whole case mod bit with my computer. Window kit, UVs, funky lights and more fans than I know what to do with... and I can admit that I didn't even know case modding existed untill after my first LAN party. I didn't start modding because it was the "cool thing to do", I did it because it just looks awesome. I don't LAN anymore, and I really don't care that I'm pretty much the only one to see my case - I love it, and I'm damn proud of it.

For that reason, I can respect a modded car. I can respect the time and money put into it. But when I see any car, modded or not, driving past with the stereo loud enough that I can hear it, then all I can think is, "You obnoxious *******."

It's all good and well to put some effort into the look of your car, but everyone around you does not need to hear what you're listening to. If you want loud music, put some ****ing headphones on.

Some people (myself included) spend a fair amount of time in our cars, and some people (again, myself included) really enjoy listening to music. What's wrong with facilitating our love of music while travelling by spending a little money on a decent car sound system?

You're unlikely to wreck your sound system in a crash unless you completely total your car (like you drive it into the ocean or something), and anyways all decent car insurance policies these days ask you about optional extras including sound systems and then factor them into your premium.

Also, if you can afford a good sound system you can afford an immobiliser and alarm, making your car much less likely to get stolen.
