Full Spectrum Warrior

When I first heard about this game I didn't pay much attention to it. I sort of assumed it was another delta force: black hawk down or something similar. Boy was I wrong. This game is my wet dream. It's what I've been looking for. It's--it's..FOR XBOX?! And it won't come out for that until june or so, and not on the PC until september. This video should give you an idea of what this game is. It's longish.

I used to believe that we must fight the future, lest change come without our consent. I was wrong. The truth is that we must embrace the future, for only with change can we remain the same.
And when the moment is right, I'm gonna fly a kite.

the chopper in the second pic looks like it has 'lol' on the bottom [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]... I'm assuming it's really the 101st airborne though.

If you think it looks just like America's Army, like I did, you're entirely wrong. Dowload the video. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]
It's not a FPS.

Not only does it look like AA, but it sounds like it too. The grenadier launching a grenade and a grenade exploding sound exactly alike in both games. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]
DO NOT WANT.

the difference between this game and the others you mention is you don't directly take control of any of the guys according to what i heard in some interview with the developers on a tv show

Well, the reason things look alike and sound alike could be because that's what they look and sound like IRL. Maybe.

[Eurogamer.net preview extract]
...The missions we see involve teams - each including a grenadier, an automatic rifle, a normal rifle and a team leader - covering each other as they move through cities shooting people in the head. And getting shot in the head. When your boys do the killing, it's with gung-ho explosions and bodies flying through the seared air. When a soldier gets capped, it's in full slow motion with groaning, close-up, claret-spilling, tear jerking, heartstring-pulling, hawk-loving sincerity. It's that kind of game. Really PC. Not.

Mission objectives include rescuing fallen soldiers and pulling them out of hotzones (dude) and taking airports. The realism is incredible. When the camera moves it jiggles as if on the shoulder of a newsman, giving the authentic CNN feel. The music sounds Middle Eastern (we told you it was less than sensitive) and American soldiers shout "wooha" when people die. Can't see the snipers? Call in a chopper and it'll scout the area and update your GPRS system to give their location. In the middle of sandstorm? No choppers, no help, no backup. Shoot to kill, Crawdaddy. Horrible? Yes. Thrilling? Damn straight.

Then there's the fog of war. Basically, everywhere your team isn't looking is a blurry mess, representing the fact that legions of evil types could be sitting with guns trained actually up your backside and you wouldn't know. You can turn soldiers round one by one, so, like, you don't end up in the great cinematic slow-motion death grave in the sky. It's just another example of how while Full Spectrum Warrior is a game, it was originally designed to train troops. You know what happens if you all look one way? You die. You learn this very quickly...

The long-ish (15+ min) gameplay video on their site which BobTheMasher linked to too explains how the game plays. It seems pretty intuitive and the environment gets blown apart pretty easily. In one part a trooper looks peeks around the corner and the corner itself gets chipped and blown apart in that Matrix-lobby-column style. Relievingly I saw some unarmed civies just minding their own business. Very neat AI.

It's not a shooter, it's a squad based tactical game. Cannon-Fodder (with the anti-war replaced by the pro-war) + X-COM + Jagged Alliance + Real-time = FSW? Now if only someone would remake UFO: Enemy Unknown or H&D with this engine...

Bobbert: Yes, bought it, played it, finished it, loved it. But the squad AI still isn't would benefit from some of the stuff that the video shows. As it is, they occasionally still require some precision babysitting and micromanagement in order to work as intended. Outdoors the SAS squaddies work well, but once you're storming confined indoor spaces, corridors or narrow tunnels it gets difficult. It'd be great if they knew how to do some of the things that the extended video shows, like stacking up to a corner, maneuvering sideways in order to get a clear shot (instead of just yelling "FRIENDLY IN MY LINE OF FIRE!"), or being able to have someone cover the rear without him always turning around to face the source of every gunshot or explosion.
