So MB and I participated in an Outing Club Outing at Chimney Bluffs State Park on the Southern Shore of Lake Ontario, and I figured you guys might like to see some of the photos taken by MB. Basically, Chimney Bluffs is a massive wad of clay that has been eroding so quickly that it forms these reall cool spires of mud and rock. It kind of looks like that place in Lord of the Rings where Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli and riding through to get to the paths of the dead, except where we were was red and brown instead of white.

Climbing up into one of the valleys formed between the spires:

Some examples of the spires that were formed in the clay:

These people never even saw us:

Thats me, heading back down to the lake shore:

Up close view of the lake shore:

Cool looking waterfall. It looks like its solid rock, but its actually clay. You could stick your fingers in it and it would deform under your touch:

That's me climbing a fallen tree to get up onto the bluff from the shore:

There were places where the clay supporting the vegetation on the tops of the bluffs had eroded away completely. All that was left was a layer of dirt held together by roots. The trail along the bluffs went right over a few of these spots, so we had to be careful:

This is me again:

That's me waving at MB from afar:

2005-04-12, 6:23 AM #26
Guys, they were made out of clay... they werent solid rock. And they were only about a foot think towards the top... they would've collapsed if we'd tried to climb them. We had to be careful anyways just climbing up the ravines... there were places where the mud was at least knee deep, possibly even waist deep. And you couldnt really tell before hand whether where you were stepping was safe or not, it all looked the same. Also, we didnt want to contribute to the erosion of the clay... from above on the bluffs especially, you could see where people had been climbing all over the area and had caused a lot of damage.

Ah, you should have rather given a link to a high-res image.

Nice work otherwise.

That's a pretty neat-looking place. The spine-spire things remind me of the movie Pitch Black.

EDIT: I've got a pretty nice panorama-making program - if you send me the images I could see what I could do with them.

Boco, there's not many places in Scotland like that, seriously. We've got lots of hills, forests, and clay, but nothing that looks too much like that. I'll go out tomorrow and show you the only clay nearby I know of. ;)

Haha, those are all photoshop'd. Everyone know's MITs can't go OUTSIDE. Especially in a place so far from a wireless access point, a dialtone, or a thick pipe. I hear they can sense those things with their nose hairs.
