About $2.34. This is the highest ANYBODY can remember around here. And whats better, I can cross the Va border and get gas for about $2.20. The greedy morons down here like to jack up the prices, and the extra tax doesn't help either.

$1.98 fools! HAHAHAHA!

I live in GA - which has the cheapest gas in the country. Yet if you come down here, EVERYONE complains about the gas prices. Yet we have the cheapest.

We're all spoiled rotten I guess...

Nevermind.

If you don't have a car that specifically says in the manual or on the gascap that you need supreme, then you're wasting your money.

It doesn't increase performance in engines that don't require it, it's a common myth.

I pay about $2.50, btw.

Performance or not, it decreases early detonation in older cars and higher compression ratio engines. My 1982 car has a compression ratio of 9.0:1 and will ping up hills if I give it heaps on 96 RON. A lot of older engines are designed to run on higher octane fuel with lead in it. The engine in my dad's car used to be 9.4:1 until he changed to low-compression piston heads, that was just a family run-around as well, not a sports car or anything.

Paying 1.14/Litre AUSD here, can't be bothered converting it, it's probably more than US, but less than UK.

In Britland you can expect to pay $6.09 US for standard unleaded.

Mmm. Diesel in my area's up to 89.9 pence a litre, which adds up to 50 cents more a gallon. Gotta love the tax.

Yeah, it's all about compression. The higher your engine compression is, the higher octane you need.

Octane is a way of measuring a fuel's tendency to "pre-detonate". Think of how a diesel engine works. There are no spark plugs - the fuel is simply injected into the combustion chamber, and the pressure and temperature combine to create explosions.

In a petrol engine, when you have very high compression (let's take my M5, with 10:1 for example), if I put in 87 octane, the fuel would detonate due to pressure and temperature before the spark plug fired. The piston and valves would not be in the right place for the detonation to occour. The likely outcome of this on almost all modern engines is the exhaust valve opening only to greet the piston, which is the "knocking" noise.

So, as far as normally aspirated engines go, you need to find an octane that causes your engine not to knock. If you have done that, there is *no* benefit to going any higher.

On most turbo/supercharged cars go, as long as the boost control mechanisms are working properly and have not been modified to allow more boost, the manufacturer's octane rating still is the highest you should bother going. The engine won't say "Look, he's fed me 94, I'm going to run more boost!"

yeppa, my manual says recommends superior or perninium, and then on my gas inlet door, it says requires perninium, so i just give the damn thing some perninium gas and be done w/ it.

but it always pain me when i see the gas price, regular is like 2.20ish, while the perninium is up to 2.49 here which suck.

Filled up at 7-11 today, $2.26 a gallon for 85 octane. GOOD GRIEF! When I drove home yesterday, or the day before, at another 7-11 it was only $2.20.

I try and walk to and from town. It's not but a 3/4 mile walk one-way. Unfortunately, school is 13 miles away. If I ran there, I could be there in about 90 minutes.

The U.S. is kinda spoiled. Most of the rest of the world has to pay $3.00+ per gallon. As Detty pointed out, it's insane in Britland. :/
