When you open the door for someone, or someone opens a door for you...

Do they/you ever reach out and touch the door as they walk through?

I've been noticing that a lot of people do this lately, you open a door for them and they say "Thank you" and then as their walking by, they touch the door. Not enough to open it or keep it open should I let it go, but they still reach out to touch it.

Just wondering if this is a local thing.

If someone is holding the door for a group of people with me in the crowd, I just walk through so I don't cause a block-up without touchning the door. I don't touch it either. But I have noticed people doing this, and I relate it to that people want to return kindness but panic, and don't know how.

almost everyone does it. its part of our insecure non-trusting culture.

Yeah, I've noticed this too. I'm guilty of it, as well as almost everyone, I think. I'm not sure why I do it. I think it may have something to do with the fact that some times, who ever is holding the door open, is also walking, and they hold it long enough for you to get there, then let go. Because this happens, we get in the habit of touching the door, even if they hold it open the entire time.

I touch the door... maybe it's subconsciously a gesture of courtesy? Like to say "thanks for holding the door for me; I've got it now"? But it does come in handy for those times where they let go of the door a bit too soon and you have to apply a little force to keep it open.

Well, they're going out of their way to hold the door open for you. By touching the door you're indicating that they can let go.

Think about it, most people hold it open not because they think you can't do it yourself but rather to avoid it slamming in your face if you're not paying attention.

I opened a door and hit some guy on the other side today...but yeah, I agree with kyle90. I do the same thing, but mainly out of habit.

Sometimes it's a good thing when someone touches the door, then it does signal you to let go. At orientation I held the door open for one person, but they never touched the door. I ended up holding the door for the entire orientation group because no one touched the door...I know I could have let go of the door and just walked inside, but it just felt rude :/

I always touch the door when I walk through, and everyone I hold the door for does the same thing....

I totally agree. And I think I reach for the door oft just this thought in mind. And quite often, unless it's old people coming after me (or younger ladies), I do only hold the door open until they barely reach it.

I prefer when people don't hold doors open for me. It's fun to slip through as it closes.

Well Flirbnic, they won't hold it for you if you increase your challenge and attempt from further away.

That's what I do, most of the time. Happens at the entrance to the shopping center, everytime there's always just someone there by chance, holding that door open for me... :)

I usually just hold the door for someone if they're behind me. I dont wait around holding the door until they're all the way through though unless i'm walking with them.

If someone is coming the other way through the door, if the door opens towards me i'll pull open the door and hold it while the person goes through, then go through myself, if it's a push door you have to go through to hold the door anyway so theres no point in holding it.

Ah, who'd have thought doors would generate such discussions :p

I hate it when you're right behind someone and they don't even bother pushing it open so the door has enough momentum for you to walk through. Especially when the glance back and you know that they know you're there. Pricks.

Ya, I was holding the door for a guy at the mall today and he completely bends his body over to reach for the door. It was kinda weird, he acted like I was shutting the door and that if it closed he would die. It wasn't just a touch thing either, he used both hands to make sure it wasn't going to close. (I had even held it for a few seconds before he got there which he completely saw and knew I was holding if for him.) I think a touch is OK, but contorting your whole body to manhandle the door is just a little overboard.

when someone opens the door for me, i don't touch it, but in doing so, i feel kinda weird, like i should hold the door open for the person behind me... It's funny sometimes when someone just pushes the door open, I run past it, before it closes. XD

I've had people reach around me to touch the door with their fingertips.

Come on, people. I'm standing here, holding the door with my body.. I'm doing you a favor!

Like was said before, I don't think they think it's insulting or whatever. ^^^

I too like to slip through the door, even though I usally end up holding doors for others than they do for me. It's kind of wierd when they do though (if they're doing that walking and holding deal), because I tend to get to the door and hold it with my foot (it's much more efficient. I open doors by pulling it a little and then using my foot to open it the rest of the way) so they get confused and don't know quite when to transfer control of the door.
