Wth?!? Tv program blocker?!?!
2005-04-18, 2:42 PM #1
Is this thing really necessary?!

The story:

Okay, my mom has got to have something against every bloody tv show on the planet! I mean, every show is "inappropriate" in some way to her... Malcolm in the Middle, That 70's show, Family Guy, the Simpsons*... wtf?
* - she actually allows the simpsons but she'd rather we didn't watch it... kinda like she is with James Bond...

So, because I'm constantly trying to figure out why she has to be such a ***** about it all the time, she activates that damn blocker on the tv, and now tv-14 things won't play, plus a lot of lower-rated stuff... even some y-7 things are blocked (cartoon network)...

She doesn't condone mature video games, she doesn't condone profanity (even though she uses it just as much as I can), and she won't let us watch these tv shows (even though I don't even really watch tv anymore -- I usually just catch a show or two every once in a while)...

I can't even browse some of these massassi threads freely , due to "inapproproate content" by her standards... though the only thread type that usually presents a problem are the desktop threads... for what are now obvious reasons. Not that that's really much of a problem... and if she found out there were post ur picture threads here she'd probably confiscate my internet... (I don't mean to rant about massassi... just pointing out the insanity of the woman who claims to be my mother -- she'd call you guys out in a second)

Oh thank god for college! Sooooo close to freedom!

GOD BLESS THE CORRUPT WORLD!

*profanity*
*profanity*
*hand gestures*
*more profanity*
*burns cross* (not really)

if she has a net nanny type thing installed on the computer, there are work around for them... google it and you can try to disable the net nanny stuff... theres probably even ways to get around the TV blocker as well.

but out of curosity, how old are you?

Move out when you're 18.

As soon as you turn 18 I don't want to hear it. :P

yean, but this still seems really extreme...

I'll be at VA Tech before I hit 18... that's good I guess...

Considering he's almost 18, and will be going to college soon, wtf move out seems right on par for me. Unless she's paying for it.

And there's the other thing I forgot about... it involves driving mainly...
My mom won't let me drive "freely" (like, every day to/from school) because I can't pay for it... now, before you say "get a job" I'll say SHE WON"T LET ME because she needs me to help watch the younger siblings...
hence, I wouldn't be able to pay for moving out

Get a job you can have your younger siblings hang out at.

IE, Chuckee Cheese, Discovery Zone and what not.

...it's a TV blocker. Moving out is not something that you can easily and comfortably afford with a job at Taco Bell.

And an internet blocker. And the lack of free driving privileges. And probably more.

If for no other reason than the lack of MA games (which practically every game that's worth a damn is MA now, NOT THAT THAT'S MANDATORY, just stating an observation) and the internet blocker, I would leave.

Actually, when I reinstalled windows the internet blocker things were reset so it's not a "problem" anymore. They had it set up before, but all it did was block some dbz web pages... :\ which is why I'm not saying anything about it to them... (it didn't block any massassi pages, thankfully... I meant I had to be careful where i went when she was around for something could happen to be there and she'd ban me or something...)

and it's not like I can't just close the door if I'm playnig, say, half life...

Sollution.

Ball your hand up in a fist.

Extend arm forward towards her face.

Tell her to STFU.

If that doesn't work, find something to hit her with.
2005-04-18, 3:34 PM #16
Did you explain to her that the majority of bad influences does not come from TV nor the PC, but from friends, family, and school?

So in other words, the worst thing she could possibly do is let you go out her door, talk to anyone, or see anything.

And I assume you already explained to her that come 18, her rules don't even apply anymore, because you'll be a freakin adult. Hell, piss her off and get a porn magazine or something. :p (Note: Only do this if you are ready to move out and only need a reason)

But really, just ask what her reasoning behind not letting you watch shows that are rated for kids 3 years younger than you.

If she's a single mother, then it's not unreasonable for her to expect you to help look after siblings, and anything that'd intefere with that would cause problems.

But everything else.. yes, wtf.

She blocked... DBZ? OMG, slap her. It's a freakin 8 year old kids show. A KIDS show.

Thats like saying you can't watch the teletubbies.

I was thinking more on the lines of "Award her with greatest woman of the year" but whichever. :-P

Honestly, to me, it seems she's protecting the younger kids. I mean, if she thinks she's got to protect an 18 year old kid, she's a bit scewed.

I didn't read any of this... but... She lets you watch the Simpsons, but not Malcolm in the Middle???

Your mom is officially crazy. That is all.

No the IE/MS content blocker blocked them... that blocker's a pos... the thing said the sites were too violent though I can't see how a cartoon can easily be a level 4 violence rating...

Either way, she really didn't like how I watched dbz a while ago (like majin buu's "suicide" to beat the good guys and the other "senseless" violence throughout the show... good gravy!)

Also, she's not single... my dad's just works in New Jersey during the week. He's home on the weekends, though he usually goes to work...
I was going to say that my age 13 brother is allowed to watch everyone too, but my brothers have too many extracurricular activities.. boyscouts, baseball, soccer, basketball... I don't do anything now besides chess club... (I shouldn't have quit basketball... I miss those days now :() though I've been skipping it lately in favor of driving home and getting home early once in a week (she lets me drive to school on wednesdays b/c of chess club... it's the only time letting me drive has been "convenient" for her...) I get out of school at 2:40 and wait around doing nothing until 3:20 b/c the school my brothers go to is so slow getting everyone out... I don't get home until 3:40 usually... you can easily see why I really would prefer to drive myself -- so I wont end up running the tardy bell in the morning (I leave earlier so I have 10-20 minutes to spare instead of just 2) and I don't end up waiting around for 40 minutes, bored, after all my friends have gone home... (because I lack motivation to work on homework right after school)

bleah... too much typing...

I was bored one day, so I installed Netnanny and timed how long it took me to get around it without using the master password (that I set).

Two minutes and fifteen seconds.

And that includes bootup time.

I'm seriously just kidding. I'm sure she is a kind and pleasant woman.

Is she blocking the shows because she doesnt want you watching them, or because she doesnt want your younger siblings watching them?

My mom is exaclty the same way. She recently freaked out when she found out that Kill Bill (which I have posters of in my room) was Rated R.
2005-04-18, 8:57 PM #28
Boy, I'm glad my mom pretty much gave up on me. Hitting 18 should do you wonders though, but still make sure you tell her the "bad vibes" come form the outside world, and not Teletubbies (well, that's not exactly true...)

Both.
She's told me that I shouldn't be watching them b/c of material that's not appropriate for really anyone to be watching.

As if I haven't already seen it just about everywhere else...

Find out the password to the VChip. It's likely someone's birthday, or 00000.

Frankly, being a content provider for TV, I think it's awesome that she's using the device instead of protesting the content of our programs.

Aside from that, you've obviously been able to access any kind of information that she's trying to protect you from, so, no big deal.

And to those of you saying TV sucks: You're watching the wrong stuff, and keeping that bad junk alive by watching it.
