Holonet borked?
2005-04-20, 5:14 AM #1
Oh noes! My IRC habit is going to have to go unfulfilled until holonet resurfaces! I shall weep quietly into the night! :(

But yeah, I'll just have to lurk more in the forums then...

And because it hasn't been posted in a wee while, I thought I might brighten up your day...

IRC means Internet Relay Chat. It's just a program for internet chatting. Some chat communities may be into warez and piracy, but not all.

This sort of thing seems to happen each time you folks pick a server. Maybe you should heed the warning and find a decent server for once. A server that actually has a gaming community, maybe?

Pssh, at least MINE can do a DNS lookup before failing to connect. :p

I've learned something valuable from this experience. Namely, mIRC will try to resolve a server 99 times before giving up.

True. However, there are game related servers out there that contain thousands of gamers (you know, the people that actually play the things that we create), and I've always found it strange that Massassi tends to distance itself from them. I understand that most of us despise the people that play our creations (Zoners, etc), but it seems to me that it would be in our best interest to become a part of the overall communities for these games, instead of just the elitist editing community.

An example of what I'm referring to would be something like ETG, which consists of thousands of gamers and editors that exist, simultaneously, on a server that revolves around one of our favorite subjects: games. They have a proven track record, and for their size, they've been very quick to resolve problems.

Anyways, that's just my two cents. I know Massassians enjoy their uniqueness and solitude, but with a half-dead games and no real editing future on the horizon, maybe it's time that we become a part of the overall gaming community. It just seems logical to me. Good day.

Holonet > The server you speak of

Holonet might be small now, but it's growing. It's also a WAY friendlier community than any other IRC server I've been on.

Gamesurge is also a viable alternative. It's a network dedicated to games. I think the idea the of a 'games only' IRC network is somewhat stupid, and I much prefer generic IRC networks like Dalnet or Efnet, but if it's what you're looking for then Gamesurge is very good.

EnterTheGame was just an example, and I can speak of them with experience, as I use to run #JediKnight for JKMAG there for years. GameSurge is also quite good, but I've had alot of trouble connecting to their US servers lately. If you need a NickServ, you couldn't use ETG anyways.

Why would a network that revolves around games be stupid? It makes quite a bit of sense when you think about it, and judging by the thousands of people using these networks, I'd guess that they'd disagree with you as well.

Either way, it was just a suggestion that seems like a logical step to reviving Massassi to me. We are sort of a game-related site, despite the fact that half of us seem to have forgotten that over the years.

I would never abandon Holonet unless I absolutly had to. I love what #massassi has become, and what it has established.

The thing about #massassi is while it may have it's...erm..."idiots",it isn't because they swear like a blue streak, spam the channel, be insanely stupid, and annoy everyone.

Meanwhile, on servers that are thousands of people strong, you'll be getting a helluva lot more stupid people.

#massassi has a smaller amount of members, but you really get a feeling of community, because you know everyone who's there.
