I need new PC speakers (in other words, help me)

After having these 2 cheap, dieing, not-good-to-start-with speakers for about 7 or so years now, I need some decent speakers to go with my nice sound card. Heres my critia:

  • $150 or less perfered, but I'll pay a little more for a huge jump in quality or for a really good deal
  • Subwoofer would be very, very nice
  • Access to a headphone jack through the speakers is a must, and a microphone jack would be great
  • 2.1 or 3.1 system, as of right now can't have surround sound, unless anybody knows some poles or whatnot I could put the speakers on and move them everytime I want to play
  • Of course, good sound and construction quality

In all honesty, I don't really know anything about audio, so I really need some help here.

Expensive , but worth it. They're $200 (Canadian) cheaper without the subwoofer, though. You can also expand the set to 5.1 if ever you want to in the future.

If you're just looking for a 2.1 setup spend about fifty bucks. The set I have are Altec Lansing. You will be very happy with the jump in quality from the typical two speaker deal and when you're ready for a true surround setup you won't feel like you already spent too much.

Since all I look at now are Surround Sound speaker sets, I'm not sure how my suggestion compairs to what's out there now, but about a year ago when I was still looking at 2.1 setups, the Altec Lansing ATP3s were awesome sounding.

I've been looking around on my own some, and I've got a problem. I want to have a microphone too, but I've got a pair of Logitech gaming headphones that have a built it mic. But I have to plug it into the main speaker port and the mic port if I want to use it, unpluging my main (however crappy) satellite speakers. Thing is, I want to use them both. Anybody know a speaker set that has a mic plug or a way I can work around this?

I know you can get a splitter that you set up to switch back and forth between your Speakers and a Headset. Not sure if you could bypass the unplugging though, its worth looking at.

The thing that frustrates me the most is that my friend got some Dell standard 2.1 speakers and on the main satellite there is a headphone and a mic jack, so you don't have to plug it in the back of the computer. Annoying that I can't find a good set of speakers that has one.

Another couple of questions, how are Creative Labs and Logitech speakers, if I was to go with them?

Logitech Z3e's are what I have. Amazingly good set of speakers, and voted one of the best 2.1 gaming speakers by some overclocker's forum place. I must concur--the positional audio is amazingly good (esp. in games like WC3, CS, and CoD).

Backslash I've honestly never seen a switch like that, who carries them?

I love the 5.1 version of these. This is the same thing really just without 3 more speakers :P

I would suggest Logitech Z-2300. I have never ever been dissapointed in any logitech product i've bought, and these are a great 2.1 speakers. Also has a headphone jack on the remote so you can move it around if necessary.

If you want to get a 5.1 system, though, i'd suggest the Z-640 system. They're what i have now, and i love them. Cheap they may be, but they are awesome all the same, and has the headphone jack on the center speaker.

Exactly. I have those too. I love them. And while I COULD use the jack on the center speaker, I prefer plugging directly into the soundcard.
