So I see that there's a switch I can hit that extends the bridge.... but how, without cheating, am I supposed to hit the switch?

Going back to your question, I remember going underwater for some reason, but my memory is vague.

Hmmm.... if I remeber correctly the switch is... go to the edge where the bridge is supposed to connect to, then look over and you should see a hole where the bridge fits into, jump in there and you should see a switch, flip it and jump into the water(otherwise you will get crushed). The bridge is extended and you can continue onward. You'll like the boss fight at the end.
