(a simple question of these terms. I don't think I found a solution to this question yet, if there is one. Any engineers here?)

edit:Better question:

"A car runs on a(n) _______."

Engine or motor?

It's simple. Since you used the article 'a', the correct term has to start with a consonant sound. Thus, motor.

gbk, wouldn't work because it would be "an internal" not "a internal"
I can't think of anything to put here right now.

Erm, I don't think he meant for the decision to be based on the grammar of the sentence.

Engine seems more appropriate to me.

In that case, engine.

Engines run on fuel. Motors are electric. So it depends now on the car.

I would answer "road." The question doesn't make sense anyway, since a car doesn't run at all without a motor or engine.

IT'S A TRICK QUESTION!

Technically it would be an engine, but either one works because an engine is a type of motor. It's a motor that produces motion through the use of a fuel. A motor is any type of machine that creates motion through any type of energy (electric, solar, wind, water, hydraulic, fuel, spring...).

A "motor" is either, internal combustion or electric.. well read the definition.

Motor - A device that converts any form of energy into mechanical energy, especially an internal-combustion engine or an arrangement of coils and magnets that converts electric current into mechanical power.

I don't think either work though..

My car runs on a motor.

My car runs on an engine.

More like:

My car runs on fuel, using an engine.

Motors are not limited to combustion or electric, they can be powered by anything as long as they create mechanical force.

For me its simple. If it is in a car, truck, on an airplane, or some kind of vehicle, its an engine. If it is in an appliance or a tool or something like that, its a motor.

Though it does make it confusing when you think of the Steppenwolf song....

One more thing that I was going to put in my first post but forgot:

An engine is a type of motor, like a turbo is a type of supercharger.

There, I feel better.

I would be interested in hearing about a motor that was neither fuel-powered nor electric, then.

Mmm, not quite. A turbocharger runs off exhaust gas pressure, a supercharger runs off the crank. They aren't really comparable like that, their is a definite difference between them.

If it is easily removed from the boat, like your standard fishing boat, then its a motor (ie, motor boat). If it is part of the boat, like a naval vessel, where they would have a whole engineering crew, then its an engine.

Hydraulic Motor

A turbo IS a type of supercharger. It's a supercharger that runs off of exhaust gases instead of a belt powered by the engine itself. A supercharger (and there are many types) is a power-adder that compresses or forces more air into the intake manifold (and, in turn, the combustion chamber) than would be there in a normally aspirated setup. A turbo does this, though not the way most other superchargers do. I was being technical though, most people now don't realize that a turbo is a type of supercharger.

It doesn't have anything to do with whether it's removeable or not. It's what the machine uses to generate power. Fuel for engines or electricity, hydraulic, wind, water, etc. for motor.

Exactly, all engines are motors but not all motors are engines.

And see most of my other posts for motors that aren't powered by fuel or electricity.
