So in Rochester there is an abandoned subway system. This past weekend I went with a few of my friends (not DS because hes dumb) to go wander through these tunnels.

The first part of the tunnel. This looks right out onto the raging river.

Yea.. that walkway wasnt very sturdy. In fact, a lot of the boards were missing. Thankfully there were alot of stone alcoves to the left we could support our weight on. Underneath us was at least a foot of water. (Wasnt flowing water)

Crossing the river on the under part of a bridge. There was alot of strange graffitti here. We also ran into two guys that were exploring the subway as well.

same bridge

thats the exterior of the bridge, seen from another bridge down the road. (we were in the lower part with the arches)

Thats how freaking dark it was. I used my flash in that one too. It did practically nothing

Same photo, but lightened up alot so you can see the detail.

this section reminded me a lot of HL2. Minus the scary combine people. and head crabs.

With flash.

I was expecting sandwiches. :(

Cool pics though, and I see the homeless have some reading material.... or maybe that's toilet paper.

I doubt it was apple juice.

And I'm surprised they just let people wander around down there. You'd think they would have blocked it off or something.

There is a fence to keep people from falling down the enterance... but you can seriously just walk in. The other end has a gate though. But the gate was opened. *shrug*

Awesome.

I love hiking and exploring areas. Just trekking around.

I used to do things like that. My favorite are abandoned hospitals. Waverly Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky is my favorite. It's an abandoned mental and teburculosis facility. My cousin has a friend that explores and videotapes abandoned prisons. He made this really creepy video of a prison in Chicago that was neat.

hmm, urban exploring aint my kind of thing. I'm more of a nature person. In fact we're planning a night hiking trip to mont royale next thursday. We're gonna climb to the summit in complete darkness, and I'm planning to take a sunrise shot of downtown montreal from the observatory on top of the mountain.

The only thing I have is a long straight boring drainage tunnel that goes on for ever. And every time I try to go in there the wusses that go with me always chicken out before we go more than a mile. :( Next time I'll bring the only flash light. On the down side there's a bunch of nasty grafitti porn.

Cool. Next time, bring an airboat.

I wonder why they abandoned a subway system... Was it for lack of customers? Or changing standards and requirements?

The southern US has a disappointing lack of cool stuff like that. I'd love go to to some places like that subway, or places like this guy. Could you tell what that big, dark room was supposed to be?

Pics 6 and 7. The architecture just seems to be a little nicer than the other parts. Maybe I'm seeing things.

You live in New York and the best thing you can do with your time is visit old subway tunnels!?!?
2005-05-02, 7:27 PM #25
That is awesome. The only thing close to that is the old abandoned mines, but they're dangerous. Supposedly there's a few ghost-towns around here, but I've never been to them. Wow. I've never realized Nevada had so many abandoned places.

I disagree.

Anyway, this is Rochester. Not New York City.

Awesome, you have to let me know the next time you guys hit this subway!

i got an 1 million caddle powered portable spotlight, and an second one that is 3 million and can plug into car cigar outlet, and lol i even have an portable car battery also :p so i could probably make the 3 million caddle one last for an hour or two if i bothered to lug along the car battery :)

but that probably would come in handy in that place.

I use a headlamp - much more convenient. Then I have two hand helds as backups. I also carry an FRS radio at all times.

Its not how you carry it that matters (in the subway at least) its how much brightness it produces. Our flashlights didnt really let us see far down the subway

Urban exploration is great fun. Unfortanatly there is hardly anything like that around here, in the suburbs of Sacramento California.

that's why i think it would be nice to perhaps bring both of those lights for combited 4 million caddle, would really light things up decently, but only last 30-40 min each so.... *shungs* probably would be good for a few good long distance photos

Yay! Exploring! However, I like backpacking. Its awsome. And my friends and I play night games in the forest when we go backpacking. I use LED headlamps. Best thing ever, backpacking is.
