Nerd Celebrities...
2005-05-03, 5:47 AM #1
I've become pretty good friends with this guy.... who happens to have been the lead programmer for Everquest and one of the 3 programmers that worked on Quake 2 and Quake 3. He's a cool kid and we always talk about music and stuff. He started out with 3dfx back in the day....

Anyone else know nerd celebs? Those people that every you would normally talk to would be like "oh? who cares?" but to the select few, they are dieties.

...no, but I could give you his website and you can join his nerd forums and talk about nerd things... very similar to here, just with more emphasis on the nerd aspect of everything. I'm not using nerd as derrogatory, just descriptively... you understand, right? I mean, we're all nerds here.

Vin Diesal is a big video gamer and also plays a lot of Dungeons and Dragons.

Robin Williams is also a big gamer and was into Day of Defeat for a while. He also shows up at apple/mac conventions.

Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

Robin Williams' favorite game out is HL2, and he plays CS:S often

So being a programmer on a game makes you a celebrity these days?

I read about the Robin Williams Half-Life 2 thing a while back... he would make a great Dr. Kleiner if they ever made a movie of the game.

There's a parent of a elementary schooler here who was the art director for Hitman. He gave little presentation of sorts on video game design. It was kind of cool, I guess.

I am acquainted with the woman who did the world textures for CS:S and also has done a lot of cover and promotional art (for DoD and CS:S) and is working on Team Fortress 2, also...obviously, she works at Valve. She's really cool, and HOT! But it's not like we're friends.

If I wanted to, I could go see Rick Johnson (Raven / Jedi Outcast). One of my mom's friend's husband (who lives right next to my grandparents about a mile away, so we know them very well) has him over all the time for Dungeon and Dragons.

Yes, they are. If you're defending yourself, realize this--you program, game, and post on a Star Wars forum dedicated to an 8 year old game. I think it's time to face facts.

Yes, I game and program, but I have a life: I skateboard and play in a band; therefore I am not a geek/nerd.
Skateboarding is not a crime.

Sorry, no, you're still a geek! Accept it and move on. Geeks don't have to be losers or nerds.

The biggest geek/nerd I know used to play in a band and skateboarding is hardly a social skill.

I have a life too--I'm still a geek/nerd. You need to stop thinking it's such a bad thing.

And your definition is wrong. Just because you're a geek doesn't mean you're a loser, really.

Your definition is wrong.

I code, I go out, I play guitar, I get drunk, I play sport.

However, due to the first factor alone i'm still a geek.

Someone who's interested in gaming, programming, or other such nonesense technically speaking. Everyone has a little geek in them...it's just more showy on different people.
