Well back to my roots for some answers...

I just did a non-destructive system recover (WinXP home edition) and it said it will keep all my files intact. Well one problem, it keeps them all in a folder that it WONT give me access to.

C:\Documents and Settings

I try to open up the folder where all my old files are but it says access is denied. This is bull****, windows keeps all my files just to dangle them in front of me.

There has to be some type of hack or way around this access is denied ****.....any help?

How on earth did you log in?

Um the best I can say is check what user you are... some permission levels won't allow you to access your documents.

I logged in with the NEW owner account that it autmatically created for me. That is the only choice I have as far as the login screen goes, but the folder from my previous accounts are still there. I can access my brothers and sisters old folders, but the old owner one seems to be locked.

I AM a computer administrator....problem is so was the other account. Except the OLD one had a PASSWORD on it...and when my computer cleared the accounts it also got rid of my ability to change that account...leaving that folder inaccessable to all but its corresponding user account whitch no longer exist.

well you could just delete the folder and consider it a loss... I dunno what else you could do unless as you said you could find a windows hacker out there... but I don't think you'll have tons of luck with that.

If you have one of those USB flash drives, try loading up Knoppix, accessing your NTFS partition from there, and copy those files to the USB drive. Just don't try to write anything to the NTFS partition. Other than some hacks which I don't know, I think that's the only option you have.

If you encrypted the files, they're pretty much lost.

But if you're an admin, you should be able to take control of the folder or at least add yourself to the permissions for it, and then get in.

You weren't clear on this, but there still is an Administrator account, correct?

It seems to me that you might try "tricking" it and creating an account on the system with administrative privilages with the exact same information that the old account had. It's worth a shot.

Rendar, that same exact same thing happened to me.

Reinstalled Windows one time, lost my Administrator account with all my old settings.

Yet there they were in the Documents and Settings...

Could not rename the new title to Administrator cause it said it already existed, but would not acknowledge it was on the computer.

Eventually, just delete it and realized it was a lost cause

This is why I don't like XP. This is also why I back EVERYTHING onto CD or another HD before I reinstall Windows. I don't trust anything it says in terms of things like that.

Yea... That's all I have to say.
