I remember not long ago someone posted a link the the article about that student stealing a laptop supposedly with all sorts of priceless information, ruining his education and his life. I just got this e-mail today from RIT, thought it was kind of interesting:

Quote:
Subject: My thesis is on that computer - Would you PLEASE copy it and mail
it to me?

Hello. This is to the person who took my Silver, Dell 700M PC laptop the
afternoon of May 5, 2005 on the 4th floor in the library. I do not know the
situation that caused you to do this and I forgive you.

I did not file with the state Sheriff because I don't want your future
destroyed and your education to be ruined. I want to give you a second
chance. Everything for my thesis is on that computer and I have no other
backup. I was 2 weeks from the completion of my thesis and I would like to
finish soon for very important reasons. Would you PLEASE do me a favor and
save my thesis information on a CD and mail it to me? I would be forever in
your debt.

All of my important information is in my laptop. To access the information
go through:

My document ----research-UV project---thesis (this is the MOST IMPORTANT!)
My document----- research--- UV project-drawing
My document --- job ---- cover letter
My document --- job --- resume

Then make a copy of my thesis (the whole file for me). You can save it onto
a CD and send it to me without disclosing yourself. My mail address is:

[snip]address[/snip]

I hope that you will be willing to do me this big favor. It would mean the
world to me.

He didn't even ask for his laptop back, just his files...smart way to do it, I hope he gets them.

Is this the same guy? Was the professor just bluffing about that government/FBI/CIA/etc stuff?
