Anyone seen the new google maps? With satellite photos?

Well i've been looking at it. There are some really weird things if you look closely.

What the hell is this?

JkWhoSaysNi, do you live in Nevada? (If you do, where at?)
As for the pictures, it's probably just nuclear test stuff.

[edit]

The military knows about this, right? I looked up my friend that lives on the airforce base and I could count the fighters parked outside, along with some bombers, etc. *shrug* This map thing is fun to play with.

Yah, there's some weird stuff in Nevada. Lots of interesting designs on the ground. What's neat is looking for transients, like jet contrails and the like. I actually found a patch where there is no image data, up in Northern Ontario:

While you can see some, if not many, I'm certain that:

A. You probably can't see every one of them
B. The maps, while rather recent, are not the most up-to-date... I was messing around earlier in my UNIX class and noticed practically an entire sub-division near my house is missing, which has been around for a good year, so I don't think there's a GREAT need for the military/government to worry (not to say there still isn't need, since it'd be easier to find where the bases and such are located)

But really, if someone wanted to attack, they could probably find out where the base(s) are even if Google Maps didn't exist, if they were really determined anyway.

Have you tried Terra Server (terraserver.microsoft.com)? I've found when you enter an address (or at least a home address, since that's all I tried it with) it's one house off?

It happened with my house, and 2 people I sit next to in UNIX, as well as a few others in that class.

You do know that line on the side is so you can zoom in further, right?

You are obviously not zoomed in very far, try zooming in, and see how good it is... unless you have... if so, I apologize quite greatly.

If you go further, there is a big grey thing saying there is no image.

www.googlesightseeing.com

That site ROCKS. It's basically a site full of things people have found using the Google Map. Kinda fun to poke around with. Things like planes. IN FLIGHT. Area 51 is in there, but the imagery blows, and I'm not even sure that IS Area 51. The big shiny blob was proven to be a big patch of sand. The Hollywood sign. A big bomb range (that was cool).

Try checking out Edwards AFB is you haven't. It'll zoom all the way in and is freaking AWESOME to look at. I found TWO SR-71's outside one of the hangars. I think there were a few F-22 Raptors outside one of the hangars as well... it was hard to tell.

I just finished looking at Vegas. While it was interesting, I think it looks cooler if you're standing on ground level, and at night. The only really cool thing to look at was the Luxor.

I'm going to go look for the VLA next.

Has anyone here tried World Wind? It's like Google Maps, except with the whole world, with multiple images of all areas, place names on the maps, and in full releif.

Of course the military knows about it, and it doesn't matter. The photos are way out of date. It's spring in Cleveland, with most trees just starting to bloom. In the photos of my street, everything is all green, like mid summer.

Ordinance Survey mapping is owned by the Crown, so any geodata of the UK is infringing on that.. So it looks like the Queen could sue Google.

Linkage. I demand Linkage. Partly because of the planes, and partly because you claim it's Area 51.

Except it quite clearly isn't.

http://inspire.jrc.it/home.html
INSPIRE is the new proposed European Commission Directive on a common spatial data infrastructure. Geodata is collected by national and local government agencies, and held under liscence by the government, sold on a cost-recovery basis. There are small differences between each government, usually to do with cost of liscence, INSPIRE aims to centralise European geodata control and offer a single cost.

http://www.eurogeographics.org/eng/01_about.asp

Eurogeographics is also offering liscences for topographic datasets

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?ll=46.625000,-23.345910&spn=63.250000,116.313039&hl=en

The rather strange worldview that only the US and UK exist anywhere is because of the stricter controls on geodata in Europe. Google Maps have probably either bought the liscence from the Crown, or are somehow otherwise sidestepping the copyright. The UK has stricter laws than anywhere else in Europe, with places like Multimap going to great lengths to avoid being sued.

European geodata is not open-source.
