Games that got you hooked.
2005-05-11, 6:59 PM #1
Stolen from the PA G&T forums. Post the games that got you hooked as a youngin' and such.

RPGs : Breath Of Fire 2, the game I've had the most difficulty with to this very day. It's very hard when you're 8 years old (not to mention loooooooooooong)

FPS: Duke Nukem 3d/Wolfenstein 3d

RTS: Warcraft

Platformer: SMB baby, been playing it since I was old enough to hold a nes controller (2). Not that I was very good but I have pics to prove that I could at least get to 1-3 when I was 3 years old.

Puzzle/Games in general: Tetris. Still my crack.

Stealth: Metal Gear for NES. Had a nintendo power strategy guide/map and still couldn't beat it. stupid scorpions and having to run around the whole base looking for antivenom.

RPG: Deus Ex / World of Warcraft

FPS: DooM TNT / Far Cry

RTS: None so far, but was Warcraft III

Platformer: None, but I really want that new Klonoa for the GBA.

Puzzle: Bejewled. Shut up.

Stealth: Would be Splinter Cell 3, but I don't have a DVD-R, so it's Deus Ex / Far Cry.

Oh wait, as a young kid?

DooM.

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.

I never HAD to play a game so much in my life. I once played it for about 9 hours in a row. The game itself takes like 30-30 hours to beat. I usually played like 1 or 2 hours at a time...but one weekend I just got hooked. I started playing, and when I finished it was dark out.

Oh boy, well... this'll be tough...

I'd have to say the game that was most influencial on me as a gamer, a designer, and a person? Zelda: Links Awakening. One of the first games I REALLY got into. Played it in the hospital while I was recooperating from a major back surgery. I could get up and move around, and one day found a nintendo just sitting there, unused in the back of some office with a broken ping pong table and some board games. I sat down and played that game for the full month I was out of bed. I beat it 2 days before I had to leave the hospital.

Other games that really influenced me would have to be Bomber Man, Streets of Rage, Sonic, Booger-Man, Duke Nukem 2, Duke Nukem 3D, Tomb Raider 1/2, MGS, Smash Brothers, Starfox64, Joust, Sinistar, Kingdom Hearts, FF8, Rayman, Conkers, Diablo, Dark Forces, Jedi Knight, Sim Town, Dr. Quandry, Chips Challenge, Oregon Trail, Number ****ing munchers, Double Dragon, And of course, anything mario.

Marathon and X-Wing. Marathon takes the cake as the game that got me addicted to First Person Shooters, and X-Wing was just... well... X-Wing. It was Star Wars, it had an X-Wing, and it let you blow stuff up with it. What was NOT to like?

Zelda: Link's Awakening was a serious influence for me.

Starcraft was my RTS influence. But Homeworld 2 is what re-awakened it in me.

Jedi Knight was my FPS influence.

Same.

My first gaming system though was an old Gameboy my cousin gave me. I think it came with like 7 games... TMNT and Tetris were two of them. It might have had Super Mario Land too. :)

When I was really young, I got hooked on asteroids. Then in the early 90's, I was hooked on a game called "Shockwave Assault". Then, of course, JK.

I usually buy a game and stick with it for at least 6 months before the next one, so I am never really hooked. I just get comfortable with the SP, MP, and community.

Although I guess JK is an exception, because I played it and MotS for more than 2 yrs. straight without looking at anything else really (well, HL in between).

Crystal Caves (best platformer IMO)

Pokemon for GB (I did end up getting all 151 Pokemon, including Mew)

JK and more so, MotS (I remember getting them in a pack together and not even playing JK, just MotS)

HL/HL2

Diablo II

Golden Sun/2

Donkey Kong for SNES
