a good free normalizer

I need a free normalizer. I've dowloaded a bunch of classical music from the free sites and well, in most cases it's not the best of quality. In order to burn them I need to mormalize them first.

From what I understand, it's not good. It just flattens out the peaks without adjusting the whole audio file.

Yeah, you can't normalize a MIDI file, since it is just stored notational data, it doesn't actually have the sounds of the instruments, making it near impossible to regulate on different systems.

Goldwave?

(Of course, you need LAME to save mp3s w/Goldwave.)

Audiograbber will let you normalize WAV files and convert them to MP3 after.

MIDI -- haven't seen those in awhile.

Ever since mp3s came into being, midis have been pushed to the very back of the shelf.

Midis are easily converted into music. Unfortunatly I can't think of any free programs that do this.

Normalizing may not be the best answer. Simply increasing the gain on each file should be adequate, without changing much of the dynamics. This is probably most important with classical, as the dynamic and contrast is one of the things that make that music awesome.

To convert a MIDI to MP3, I usually load the MIDI into Sonar and put it through a DXi module and the drums and piano through a SoundFont plugin.

But there are surely other (and cheaper) ways.

Most MIDI sequencers that I use have an option to export the file as MP3..

^^That's true. BUT Unless you have assigned a real audio track/vst/some other audio generator to the the midi channel, you won't hear that channel in the mp3. If he was going to go as far as that, he might as well just remaster the volume in the midi file, because he'd already have it open in a sequencer.
