If you had the chance to buy a Nissan Skyline for $6K (plus importing) with 85K on the original engine, the car is still in great condition exterior/interior, and you can afford to have the engine professionally rebuilt, would you?
I can't think of anything to put here right now.

Regular Skyline, 1996. Not the GT-R. RB25DET to be exact.

Ooo ok... tougher question, but still value (I did an importing course btw yesterday, u can ship from Shanghai to Sydney for only $350USD all up. Don't know if those figures help in any way whatsoever, but don't get shafted on the shipping).

It doesn't have to be converted to left hand drive does it?

Oh haha, I'm not buying it like tomorrow or anything. I am getting a new job in the fall and gonna get like lots more money (CAN WE SAY MOVING OUT?). In fact I might be doubling my income. Anyway, I was wanting to get a new car and was checking out some car ads and found that you can get a Nissan Skyline for like under $10K. I wasu p in the air between a Nissan Skyline and a Pontiac Fiero. Either one I buy, I'm gonna get the engine rebuilt and overhauled that way it won't break down after like 1,000 miles.

If u can get what you want locally for under $10k, then do that, I'd say.

I'd leave an engine rebuilt untill it actually needs to be rebuilt. The factory can do a damn better job building an engine than dodgy dave's mechanics down the road. Afterall, their machines are worth a fair bit more than 5k or so... you'd hope to tolerances would be better.

Car sounds nice though... :)

Well another option I had I could purchase a better engine for another $3K or so and put that in (the GT-R style engines). As far as being rebuilt, I would take it to a Nissan dealership with Nissan certified mechanics, that way I got people who know what they are doing with a Nissan car.

See what I am looking for is an every day driving car that is nice. I love my Grand Prix to death, and as funny as it sounds, I'd like to get another car (even if something as nice as a Skyline) and drive it around and switch between cars. I was thinking on the Fiero, and dropping in a rebuilt 3.4 engine and using that as my every day driver. But when I saw a Skyline for sale for under $10K I thought "Wow" even though it has a lot of miles, though for a Nissan it's still low.

Even at a Nissan Dealership with Nissan Mechanics, there equipement isn't nearly as good as within the factory. And do they have a clue about non-American delivered Nissan's?

If you're going to spend the cash on a GT-R engine, how much is a R32 GT-R worth? Personally, I think they look better than the chubby R33 too!

85,000kms for a ten year old car isn't high mileage car. Seriously.

Well I wouldnt be buying anything until around Christmas most likely. I mgiht find a better deal by then. As far as the GT-R engine goes, I got several months to decide what to do and what to choose, between the Fiero and the Skyline.

Skyline, non-GT-R? Maybe, depends on just how good the condition is. Also (you may have answered this already but I'll ask anyway) what generation is it? R33? I'd probably do it if it was an R34, much less likely if earlier. I just like the looks a lot more.

Watch out on the Fiero though, one of the engines used in that car (I forget which) was known to catch fire for no good reason.

If your going to get a skyline you might as well go all out.. you know people would mess with you on the road and you dont want to get walked on, while driving a Skyline. You would also want to keep in mind, alot of people would probably like to steal it.. and dont forget about insurance rates.

True, but anyone who can't see that it's not a GT-R should be hit in the face. It's not like there isn't a huge difference in the looks of the car, not to mention all the badging.

I still think "Skyline" is something a hippie would call his hippie bus.

Well I wouldn't keep the Fiero engine anyway. I'd buy the Fiero GT (the GT model looks a little nicer) and replace the engine with a 3.4 engine or higher.

I could care less if stupid punks in there Honda Civics try to race me on the road. I know better than that, especially a frigging Civic, not worth my time even if I drove a POS. If I had a Skyline and a Civic was trying to egg me on, I'd roll my eyes and drive off. If it's not at least a Z28 or better then I won't look.
