Yes! Finally, some laser weapons. Although I'm a bit confused why the US is building this for Israel.

Lasers, unless in bursts, are highly dangerous to all around. I'm assuming this laser is NOT burst, and is in-fact just a re-adjusted constant beam. Because of this, if friendly, or nuetral parties found themself in the vector the beam traveled, they too would be destroyed. A slight mis-calculation could be quite fatel. Not to mention, missiles could adapt and simply project either their own laser systems to trip the laser before it found it's way to the target, or simply deploy smoke or whatnot to dim and dull the laser. Of course, I'm no scientist, and know nothing about lasers, but that's my first thought.

Well, from what I know, they can generate a beam that is focused on a specific point, so even if you went through the beam (where it is not focused), there would be no significant damage. Plus, the chances of something getting in the way of the laser as it shoots at something in the air are next to nothing.

As for defending against a laser, the only good way to do it is with mirrors. However, high powered lasers are often not in the visible range of light, so different reflecting materials would be needed. And, it is possible to just build a laser with a short enough wavelength that nothing would be able to reflect it.
